Lots of coverage over the weekend on the Chancellor’s “big bang” announcement… What can we learn from international evidence of pensions management success? 📖 Before I joined LPPI in 2017, I read the (then) recently published The Future of Pension Management by Keith Ambachtsheer. The author lays out five key drivers of success, based on long-run international empirical evidence: 👉Aligned interests with pension plan participants (reduce conflicts etc) 👉 Strong governance (both corporate and investment) 👉 Sensible investment beliefs (aligned to stakeholder goals and constraints) 👉 Right scale (enabling internal management to drive costs down and alignment up) 👉 Appropriate reward (to ensure you can build and maintain appropriate capabilities) 👍I voted with my feet as I concluded LPPI scored well against these criteria and was optimally positioned to execute on the original LGPS pooling objectives of: 1. Increased scale 2. Strong governance 3. Value for money / cost savings 4. With stock markets and interest rates down considerably over the past several weeks, we are once again reminded that funded status and interest rate inflection points can be fleeting. Aon’s latest pension auto-enrolment report provides insights into the levels of preparedness among Irish business for the new system of pension auto-enrolment. Findings show that while most employers are aware of the scheme, however more than a third (35%) of firms have yet to take any action to prepare for it. With the new system set to launch in January 2025, employers need to take decisive action to update their people and processes to prepare for the seismic change that lies ahead.
