Threats to our libraries can be small in some ways and very large in others. A small number of individuals can create a great deal of havoc. Patrick "PC" Sweeney highlighted the limited number of people pressing for book bans and their hefty devastating impact. Our political leaders need to take stands for strong libraries to ensure their maintenance and adequate funding. A thought-provoking new book argues that the way out of our current battles over curriculum lies through educational pluralism: have the government fund multiple kinds of schools, including religious ones, as many other countries do, while requiring all schools to cover common specified content. In LIBS 410: Libraries and Their Collections: Materials Selection, the foundation of understanding librarianship is laid. We will look at libraries as cultural icons, exploring the roots of early libraries and how they have developed most recently in the United States. The values of the profession will be examined, providing a lens of understanding when we look at selecting unbiased collections designed to promote lifelong readers. Growing up, we’re all fed the dream: chase your passions, follow your heart, and make your mark. Sounds exhilarating, right? But as adulthood hits, reality kicks in.
