Discussion with Usuno Sejahtera Seaweed cultivation group in Liya One Melangka village to collect data on seaweed production every year. The types of seaweed cultivated are E. spinosum and E. cottoni. The seaweed production can reach 8 tons per year if the seaweed they plant is in good condition. Based on information from the head of the Usuno Sejahtera cultivation group that the price of seaweed is currently very cheap with a price range for the type of E. Spinosum IDR. 3500 / kg and E. Cottoni IDR. 12.000 / kg. When the price of seaweed drops, sometimes the sales proceeds do not cover the operational costs incurred by the cultivator. It is hoped that seaweed prices can stabilize again so that they can cover all operational costs incurred. #seaweed #wakatobi #LiyaOneMelangka

#WBBRWednesday The Malind Anim people of Meruke in West Papua oppose the Proyek Strategis Nasional (PSN) project to protect their customary land from over deforestation, forced evictions, and the loss of ancestral lands that are vital to their identity, which defines them as Anim Ha, or “the Great People.” The Malind Anim find the actions of key businessman, Haji Isyam and Prabowo Subianto the President-Elect supporting PSN the rice project, as dishonourable, through the company, Jhonlin Group, which provides infrastructure and equipment. The Melanesian people’s ancestral land is being exploited to make way for the following; 1. Rice Cultivation: The plan involves clearing 1 million hectares for rice farming. 2. Bioethanol Production: About 633,763 hectares will be designated for sugarcane plantations to produce bioethanol. This was pushed by President Joko Widodo on July 23, 2024. 3. Sugar Production: The target is to produce 3 million tons of sugar and 300 million kiloliters of bioethanol. #WestPapua #EndColonialViolence #EndColonialism #endcolonisation #UNGA2024 #UNHRC_TakeAction #UNHRC #indonesia #foodsecurity

Biotropics Tongkat Ali Plantation Visit round #2. 3 hours away from the city centre, the team headed to a dedicated herbal plantation site to validate and sample their Tongkat Ali plants. We were assisted by the plantation manager and workers to select several trees to uproot and analyze to ensure they are meeting the standards required. The roots are then weighed, cut and cleaned before being sent off to our local post-harvest processing point. This step is usually done by identified local processors (small operation ran by villagers within the state) which will then be sent to the Biotropics HQ. Throughout the supply chain, Biotropics involvement cuts across different touchpoints from growers, government bodies, research and academics. And we love being in the thick of it! #tongkatali #sourcing #herbs #naturalingredients #eurycomalongifolia #herbalextract #brandedingredients #natural

Transforming Farming Drains into Native Wetland Areas Have you ever considered the environmental benefits of converting farming drains into native wetland areas? Amuri Irrigation Company are working with local farmers to improve sustainability and biodiversity. Here’s why this initiative is so impactful: Enhanced Biodiversity: Converting farming drains into wetlands creates habitats for native flora and fauna. This helps to restore biodiversity, supporting a wide range of species including birds, insects, and aquatic life. Improved Water Quality: Wetlands act as natural water filters, trapping sediments and nutrients that would otherwise flow into rivers and lakes. This improves water quality and reduces the impact of agricultural runoff on the environment. Flood Management: Wetlands can absorb and store excess water, reducing the risk of flooding. This natural flood mitigation is crucial for protecting farmland and nearby communities from extreme weather events. Carbon Sequestration: Wetlands are effective carbon sinks, capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. . Sustainable Farming Practices: Integrating wetlands into agricultural landscapes promotes sustainable farming. It demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship and can improve farm resilience and productivity. Cultural and Recreational Value: Restored wetlands hold cultural significance Mana whenua and provide recreational opportunities such as bird watching and eco-tourism, enhancing the connection between people and nature. It reflects a forward-thinking approach to land management that balances productivity with ecological health.
🌿 Progress 🌿 Hurunui Natives and Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura Limited have been hard at work getting 4,500 natives into the ground at AIC's new wetland development on Jersey Land Dairies, near St Leonards Drain. In addition to Totara and Kōwhai trees supplied by Hurunui Natives, a variety of shrubs, flaxes and grasses have come out of Synlait Milk Limited's 15-hectare industrial nursery, part of their Whakapuāwai environmental programme. #wetlandsrestoration #futurefarming #amuribasin

Welcome Mozambique! 🍋 🍊 🇲🇿 Mozambique's citrus industry has taken a significant step towards growth and sustainability by joining the Citrus Growers Association of Southern Africa (CGA). The CGA and the Mozambique Citrus Association (MCA) signed a memorandum of understanding this week. In joining the CGA, Mozambican farmers will now have access to a wealth of expertise and support. Tertius Strauss, Mozambican citrus grower and General Manager of Verdant Produce Mozambique, is excited about the development: "This is the start of what will turn out to be an incredible journey. A journey that will continue for generations, as we are establishing an enduring citrus industry in Mozambique. At present it is very small, about 350 hectares, but it has so much potential. Joining the CGA is one of the ways we are getting citrus in Mozambique up and running and onto the global stage." The CGA and its group of companies will empower the MCA in a number of ways. These include receiving technical assistance from Citrus Research International (CRI), advanced training by the Citrus Academy, and increased access to international markets through established CGA channels. "Even though right now there are only two large citrus farms - one near Maputo and one near Massingir - it is not about the number of growers, but about the future possibilities. For instance, the orchards at Massingir are only three years old. It employs 150 people at the moment, but when the project is completed it will provide over 800 jobs," Strauss explains on behalf of the MCA. The MCA is a broad-based grouping of stakeholders that are engaged in the citrus industry. They are motivated to establish a flourishing Mozambican citrus sector by leveraging their unique advantages, which include the nearby Port of Maputo. Lemons, Valencia oranges and Grapefruit are currently grown in the South of the country. Justin Chadwick, the CEO of the CGA, welcomed the MCA, saying: "The CGA already represents over 1 560 growers from South Africa, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. It is a great pleasure to welcome our Mozambique neighbours as well. We are now a truly united Southern African industry association. The world appreciates the quality of citrus from our region. This represents immense opportunities for everyone in Southern Africa. By working together, growers across borders can achieve greater efficiency, competitiveness, and profitability." #citrusindustry #exportcitrus #citrus #southernafrica
