What does a hotel sales department do? For the majority of hotels, the sales department is normally divided into different functions.... Leisure, MICE, Corporate, Govt, Outside Catering etc. The competition today is cut throat and frankly, the job is easier if you are in a newer property with better facilities and rooms. The job doesn't end with just selling though. So let's say even if you close a 1000 paxs wedding dinner for your hotel, your job on paper is done but not in reality. Everything from that point onwards and until the function is over, you will personally need to ensure that your client is happy with the services and then bid him/her farewell.... but only after the full payment is completed. In some hotels, the sales managers are also responsible for the shortfall......should the customer abscond for any reason whatsoever. So remember this policy......only accept functions with full payment before the event starts. Should you decide to give credit for any reason whatsoever, please ensure the GM and FC signs their name, in blood, on the proforma invoice. But in the end.....working in a hotel sales department a thrilling experience and you get to meet and closely interact with people you don't normally meet, such as celebrities, politicians and industrialists. Career progression is also superfast but this job is absolutely performance oriented.

One of the nice things about being in the hotel industry is that it gives one the ability to reflect back on the many great (or not so great) people who have shaped and influenced not only our career and also, our personality. I would like to think that I learned something from each and every one I have ever worked with because everyone has something to offer IF we are looking to learn from them. The best general managers I ever worked with, takes responsibility for revenue production and is the true sales leader at the hotel, involved in every aspect of generating business (thank you Jeffrey De Zilva ) Much have been said or written of complementary skills and work of hotel sales teams, but little is said about the role of general managers in the sales process! We have all seen how easily a poor general manager can negatively influence even the best people on their staff. By contrast, there are many average team members that have been led to success by great general managers. The secret to their success is to merge sales with service, the ability to merge these functions into powerful programs.

I have had many interesting conversations over the past few months with hotel Owners, GMs, and DOSMs, about their sales strategies, identifying some key challenges they face, including: -Finding and retaining the best sales talent. -Training and upskilling talent from other departments (Front Desk or Coordinators). -Seeking opportunities and demand to fill need periods. -Finding the right amount of proactive selling tasks to drive sales bookings. -Building a base of repeat customers. -Cost-effective lead generation where you only pay for what books. -Driving down the cost of sale. -Business on the books before a hotel opening. -Managing lead volume to focus on the most valuable opportunities. This has been insightful as it has reaffirmed what I have always thought: sales mastery is pivotal to a hotel's successful commercial strategy. The focus of any hotel should be to find and retain the best talent possible. Success begins and ends with the calibre of the sales team. Investing in, developing, and compensating the best talent is the cornerstone of sales performance and sustained revenue growth. After a long career in hotel sales, I am here to help.

Today is the first day of a new quarter and I was reflecting on my days at a hotel worrying about meeting my numbers. 🔄 Hotel Salesperson vs. HelmsBriscoe Associate: The End-of-Quarter Difference 🔄 Hotel Salesperson: 🏨Focused on one property, driving to meet revenue targets specific to that hotel. 🏨Pressure to hit quotas, secure last-minute bookings, and manage availability. 🏨Bound by the constraints of one location, with limited flexibility in negotiating across markets. 🏨Dependent on property resources, with little control over their schedule. HelmsBriscoe Associate: 💼Represents multiple properties and destinations—giving clients a world of options. 💼Independent, with no quotas or hotel-specific limitations. Success is about building strong client relationships, not just filling rooms. 💼Flexibility to set your own schedule, manage multiple clients, and balance life in a way that works for you. 💼At the end of the quarter, you’re focused on delivering value to your clients rather than meeting property-specific targets. While both roles are essential to the hospitality industry, the life of an HB Associate offers more autonomy, unlimited earning potential, and the ability to work with a broader range of clients and partners. If you’re a Hotel Salesperson looking for more flexibility, the freedom to grow your own business, and the chance to work across a wider market, it might be time to consider HelmsBriscoe. 📈 Ready to see what’s possible? Join HelmsBriscoe and take control of your career. Message me to talk about next steps! #HelmsBriscoe #HotelSales #EndOfQuarter #CareerFlexibility #SalesLeadership #WorkLifeBalance #MeetingsAndEvents #JoinOurTeam

Sales Manager at Hand Picked Hotels | Events & Social Media Specialist | First Class Hons Hospitality & Events Graduate
🌟 Why I Chose a Career in Luxury Hotel Sales (and not Medicine, Dentistry or Law) 🌟 Since I can remember, my family had grand visions of me donning a white coat or arguing cases in a courtroom, and with my straight A's at A Level, they were convinced I was destined to become a dentist, doctor, or lawyer (and for those of you that think I’m young, at least my A Levels were still letters, not numbers😂). Anyway, here’s a secret: I cry at the sight of seeing someone just slightly hurt, and my idea of a good argument is convincing someone to upgrade to an exclusive use event from a DDR! 🏨✨ Here’s why I took a detour from the family expectations and chose the glamorous world of luxury hotel sales: Passion for the Finer Things in Life ✨ Whilst my family was dreaming of dental drills and stethoscopes, I was dreaming of five-star service and Egyptian cotton sheets. Luxury hotels are my happy place. The grand décor, gourmet dining, and impeccable service make my heart sing.🎶 Proactive Sales Strategy 💼 My degree in Events and Marketing taught me the thrill of the chase. I love identifying potential clients, understanding their unique needs, and presenting tailored solutions that blow them away. Whether it's a corporate retreat or a dream wedding, turning inquiries into bookings is my kind of adrenaline rush. Plus, it’s much more fun than reading medical journals! (IMO anyway😅!) Creating Memorable Experiences 🎉 There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing a client's face light up when their vision comes to life. Being My Authentic Self & Building My Personal Brand☁️ In a world that often encourages conformity, I've created a personal brand that reflects my passion for excellence and commitment to integrity. This authenticity not only sets me apart in my professional life but also helps me build deeper, more meaningful connections with colleagues, clients, and peers. Personal and Professional Growth 📈 This career has been a journey of continuous growth. I’ve honed my sales skills, developed resilience, and learned the art of negotiation. Every challenge is an opportunity to excel and every success is a reason to celebrate. (Speaking of which, I think it’s time to book another holiday✈️) Choosing a career in luxury hotel sales has been one of the most fulfilling and rewarding decisions I’ve made. It combines my love for luxury, my proactive approach to sales, and my passion for creating memorable experiences.🤍 Here’s to many more years of making magic happen (and staying far away from dental drills and court rooms)! 🥂 (Proof below that hospitality sales can be glamorous for all you doubters out there😉) #LuxuryHotelSales #EventsAndMarketing #PassionForLuxury #ProactiveSales #CareerJourney #CreatingMemories #LoveMyJob #FollowYourPassion #HandPickedHotels Hand Picked Hotels Ruben Pita Helen Evans Jodie Boyd Douglas Waddell MI FIH Mark Clayton Ian Cross Lucy Gilpin Ariel Bouzas Julian Tomlin FIH MI Daniel Skermer
