Faster Payments Faster Payments Service was launched in May 2008 to handle the processing of internet, telephone and standing order payments in the UK market. This service runs alongside existing UK payment schemes BACS, which stands for bankers automated clearing services (for direct debits and direct credits) and CHAPS, and represents the first new payments service to be introduced to the UK market for more than 20 years. Although it was initially operated by CHAPS Co, responsibility for operation of the Faster Payments system was transferred to Faster Payments Scheme ltd when the latter company was formed in November 2011. Faster Payments Service membership is open to credit institutions with a settlement account at the Bank of England that can connect to the central payments infrastructure. Since the beginning of 2012, all internet and telephone payments in the UK have been processed via Faster Payments. All payments must reach the recipient’s account by the next working day after the customer has initiated the transaction. In practice, telephone or internet payments sent using Faster Payments will typically be available for withdrawal from the beneficiary’s account on the same day that the payment is sent. How are #DigitalPayments developing around the world? In a word, they are: growing. In their new Bank for International Settlements – BIS Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI) brief, Alberto Di Iorio, Anneke Kosse and Robert Szemere dig into trends in the latest Red Book statistics. They find that digital payments use is rising, particularly for small amounts. Strikingly, regarding #Cash, the number of small-denomination banknotes in circulation is now declining. The Instant Payments Regulation has officially entered into force, making instant payments the new standard for credit transfers. PSPs are allowed to charge for the service, but not more than for a conventional credit transfer.
