𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 The average sports fan doesn't delve too deep into the nuances of the game. They might have varying degrees of knowledge, but they watch to be entertained. A goal is a goal, irrespective of the strategy behind the pass. A wicket is a wicket, irrespective of how the batter was set up previously. If they enjoy a good game (and their team wins), they go home happy. The team's strategy isn't on their radar. This doesn't mean teams don't put effort into their strategy, team selection, and everything else. They generate millions and get paid handsomely not to just wing it. But the person watching isn't privy to this and, for the most part, doesn't care. Brands sometimes tend to forget the entertainment bit. #strategy #entertainment

This speaks to the broader role of consumer demand in shaping the landscape of sports and entertainment. Are we, as an audience, complicit in promoting contests that may prioritize spectacle over safety and integrity? I don't have clear answers for this but I feel as if this fight is a mirror reflecting our collective psyche – what we value, what entertains us, and what we are willing to overlook. Diversity in sports ownership is bringing new backgrounds and new ideas to sports. A big new ownership group are athletes and Hollywood stars. I think diversity between ownership will bring about more distinctive differences in a clubs personality and how it is run. Creating more of a personality and storyline behind each club.

A year ago today, as an intern at Wasserman Media Group, I found myself in a fireside chat with golf executives when the news of the LIV Golf and PGA Tour merger broke. The announcement sent shockwaves across social media, igniting a pandemonium of predictions that these two giants of the men’s professional game would remain at odds. Today, the divide remains evident, highlighted by the contrasting spectacles of the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament in Ohio and LIV Golf’s Houston event. As an Entry-level DE&I Cultural Strategist, I’ve observed firsthand the challenges and missed opportunities in bridging such divides. Creativity should be about fun. About play. About joy. And so should Sport. You know? But both can take themselves way too seriously. Sucking the joy and enjoyment out of both with dreaded words like “deadline” and “budget” and “competitive edge” can crush the soul. I find I need a release - know what I mean? That’s why I’m getting so much joy from collaborating with a new collective called The Revel Institute (TRI). TRI are a sports culture club that compete on their own terms - which is something I can really respect. They’re putting the fun back into sport and the joy back into creativity. Watch out for what they bring, because it might bring you some release too :-)

Members of sports teams have to earn their right to be on the pitch. Try to instil this value into your various work teams - they should perform as if they are trying to maintain their place in the team. If some seem to be lacking this commitment, think about providing a mentor to oversee progress towards improved performance.
