Weekly Friday Personal Post: Thanks Trevor S. Mitchell, MBA, FASAE, CAE, CDP for being the latest in my association leader dialogue series on Sidecar. Trevor is wrapping up his time as Executive Director and CEO of American Mensa, and he will soon become the President and CEO of International Association of Venue Managers. He's also Chair of the Texas Society of Association Executives. I was fortunate to learn a ton from him at the ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership NextGen Summit last year and appreciated him taking the time to speak with me further about his journey and his lessons learned on association leadership. Here are some of my key takeaways from our conversation: --Even people who are super successful and seem like they have everything figured out like Trevor had speed bumps along the way. This included him moving to Kansas City for a job only for that organization to close its doors a week later. --Problem plus solution equals membership value. Simple but powerful formula that's important to remember. He also said to remember that associations are in the people business. Agreed, and this is part of why I enjoy working in an association. --The youngest member at American Mensa tends to be about the age of three, and its oldest member is about 106. Not an association leadership thing. Just interesting! --Member surveys, asking your team what they are hearing from members to identify themes, and looking at online discussions are all good ways to understand the problems of your members that the association can seek to solve.
