"By compiling, contextualizing and publishing biographical and other historical information about the origins of philanthropic wealth, the stories of harm experienced by Black people become unavoidable and, more importantly, actionable – especially for funders with a commitment to racial equity or racial justice. Research that connects and centers stories of local Black communities can generate energy, opportunities and concrete actions for foundations to engage in reparations and healing efforts. This report is both an invitation and a roadmap for local foundations – studied and otherwise – to do exactly that. Although our immediate focus is the DMV, the methodology and recommendations can serve as a model for funders and activists in other cities and regions. In addition, we believe this framework and process has potential applications not just for philanthropy, but for those grappling with these questions in the public and private sectors as well." It's been a long month, but we are still in Black History Month! I'd like to take the last few days of the month to challenge my network to do something actively anti-racist. Here are a few ideas if you need somewhere to start: - Attend workshops/events that focus on race-related issues. - Have intentional conversations about race (respecting boundaries) with the intent to listen and learn. - Support the work of Black-led businesses and organizations. - Get involved/speak up! The four actions listed above are likely some of the easiest to incorporate into your schedule but I want to be clear that these actions are not the only actions nor are they one-off actions. “It seems risk has been normalized as a good thing when it involves accumulating wealth, but it turns bad when it involves giving money away to accelerate social change. Instead, what if donors allow their giving to be guided by an asset-based approach that focuses on an organization’s strengths and potential. When it comes to advancing equity and justice, the only risk that matters is the risk of not giving.” As we begin Black History Month, this insightful piece by Cora Daniels featured in The Chronicle of Philanthropy emphasises the importance of adopting a 'futurist' mindset when supporting Black-led organisations. By providing long-term funding and addressing the historical underinvestment in BIPOC-led initiatives, donors can contribute to their sustainability. The findings from this study highlight the content of philanthropic communications on racial equity, and their initial impact on the landscape of racial equity institutional; work in the United States. Racist communications and messages from philanthropic foundations subtly convey Black communities’ inferiority and perpetuate the idea that they need guidance from foundations, while also diverting attention from the realities of perpetual systemic racism. Excellent, transparent narrative here. So much truth-which is unfortunate Read until the end where the author, Chanda C. offers their five tips on discerning what leadsrs are walking into. "A New Form of White Flight Leadership transitions are challenging in any organization, regardless of racial dynamics. But when leaders of color are tasked with fixing these problems, they are too often left with little to no cash (nor significant funder relationships) to help them do it. Research from the Building Movement Project’s Race to Lead initiative found that 63 percent of POC leaders cite a lack of access to individual donors as a fundraising challenge, compared to 49 percent of white leaders who say this is a challenge. Similarly, 51 percent of POC leaders cite lack of access to foundations as a challenge compared to 41 percent of white leaders. "In practice, this makes nonprofit executives of color more like “the help” than the leaders they could be."
