We can take a step towards improving the safety and well-being of children and their families by rethinking what protection from domestic violence (DV) means and what it looks like in practice. A critical part of this work is rethinking how we define and practice accountability.   Many of us think of accountability for people who harm their partners as punishment that is enacted through systems. In child welfare, holding someone accountable often equates to ensuring that a family complies to case or safety plans, but this practice has limited impact and can further harm survivors of DV. Knowing the racialized harm families experience, it's important that we expand our definitions and practices and move the focus of accountability from individuals to systems.
