Why safer speeds and why community action? We all want to live, work, run a business or spend time in spaces and places that are comfortable, safe, interesting and welcoming. This is our chance to be part of it and help to make our streets safer and more community and business friendly. Road trauma is one of the biggest and most sustained causes of death and injury in our communities. Speed limit reduction is an effective and cheap way of greatly reducing road deaths and serious injuries. It is estimated that by reducing speed limits by 10km/h in Western Australia, we’d be able to reduce the number of lost lives and serious road trauma by 30%. That’s 48 lives saved per year and over 500 hospitalisations averted. There is a serious benefit to reducing speed and together, we can. Speed reduction improves safety and benefits local economies and community wellbeing. It contributes to building safer, healthier, more connected and people-friendly streets, where people can walk, cycle, connect and engage. Through creating safer and more lively streets, safer speeds will directly benefit local businesses through increased visitation. We're working with our partner Road Safety Commission, our Principal Partner RAC WA plus PJA Main Roads Western Australia and Department of Transport, Western Australia to promote Safer Speeds and Better Places. We all want to live, work, run a business or spend time in spaces and places that are comfortable, safe, interesting and welcoming. This is a bottom-up, grassroots program driven by local leaders and Town Teams to make their streets better, safer, healthier and more prosperous, with the support of government agencies. The picture in the graphic is of the Inglenooks, a new public space created by the Inglewood On Beaufort #TownTeam, with the support of City of Stirling (Western Australia) on Beaufort Street in Perth, Western Australia. Road trauma is one of the biggest and most sustained causes of death and injury in our communities. Safer speeds are better for everyone and a proven way to reduce the road toll. This is our chance to be part of it and help to make our streets safer and more community and business-friendly!
