What an absolutely fantastic day, beginning with the 2024 CFO summit hosted by EY, followed by the panel discussion: The Future of Leadership, for the Regional Leaders Programme with Waterford Chamber. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the panel members: Michael Stafford, Louise Grubb, Andrew Campbell-Edie, Jill Hincks, and Michael Kelly. Furthermore, thank you so much to all of the organisers behind the scenes as well for yet another very insightful discussion. My key takeaways were: 1) Strive for inclusivity and psychological safety: Provide people with the support they need in work and choice in how they want to work. Strive to create psychologically safe environments within both the organisation and team. Empower peoples voices. 2) Live in the present and celebrate the positive moments: Be truly present with those around you. Celebrate the small things, the positive moments, and don’t let the negative moments overshadow the wonderful moments each day. Each day is a new day. 3) Lead with empathy and be thoughtful: Pause and think before you speak, long enough to empathise with the other person's perspective. Focus on being thoughtful and calm, not emotional and reactive. Sometimes silence is golden, words have weight. 4) Find your IKIGAI: IKIGAI I believe translates to “a reason to live”. It is found by finding the overlap between what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. Find your reason to be excited everyday and lead through it. 5) Build resilience: Focus on learning how to adapt to change, resilience is the ability to withstand adversity. Resilience is something that is often built unintentionally, simply through living life but we can also choose to build it. Choose the harder path and show others what's possible. I finish writing this post with a heavy heart knowing this was the final panel discussion of this Regional Leaders Programme. However, that being said, I am very much looking forward to seeing you all again at the closing lunch. #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #business

When faced with poor performance, engaging the support of the Board of Directors is crucial for CEOs. Recent data shows that only 30% of business leaders rate their boards as effective, highlighting the need for improvement in board performance during challenging times. To tackle poor performance effectively, communication and engagement with the board are key. Mobilising the board team through the Chair's leadership is essential in driving necessary changes. It is vital to encourage open dialogue and prevent complacency among directors to address issues proactively. Practical steps to enhance board effectiveness include leveraging the chair's role in managing the board, encouraging participation from all directors, and adapting communication strategies to signal and address crises promptly. Utilising tools like 'The Six Thinking Hats' can facilitate constructive discussions and decision-making.
