*Do you know your Black History???* Well, the term “Blacks” refers to people of African descent or individuals belonging to the Black race. It includes all the various ethnic and cultural backgrounds in Africa; those within the African diaspora; individuals whose ancestors were brought to America during the transatlantic slave trade; the Caribbean, and other regions. After the Emancipation Proclamation; light was shed on actually abolishing slavery, ending racial segregation and discrimination and the advancement of civil rights. Notable individuals e.g Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Rosa Parks, Carter G Woodson, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Duke Ellington, Josephine Baker, Jackie Robinson etc worked and fought against the discrimination of Black people resulting in the manifestation of Black freedom of rights, Black recognition and Black preservation in all spheres and areas of life and countries. Annually, February has been set aside for the commemoration of the Black History. The month was chosen for several Black related reasons; two worthy of note are the birthday celebrations of Abraham Lincoln: the 16th United States President, who issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and Frederick Douglass a renowned Abolitionist. In this month, time is dedicated to recognize the struggles, triumphs, and cultural heritage of the Black community. Education and awareness are created and raised about the ongoing fight for equality and social justice. Blacks are highly encouraged especially in this month to learn more about their lives and their heritage and be proud of who they are. #blackhistorymonth #wintech #february

Today, on Juneteenth, we commemorate a pivotal moment in American history: the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. June 19th, 1865, marks the day that Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War was over and slavery had been abolished. Juneteenth is more than a celebration. It's a day to honor the resilience and resistance of Black Americans who endured the horrors of slavery, recognize the ongoing fight for racial equality and justice in America, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Black communities. Juneteenth also serves as a reminder that freedom wasn't instantaneous. June 19th marked the beginning of a long journey toward true equality. We must continue to confront the legacy of slavery and its impact on Black Americans today. How You Can Be Involved: Educate yourself about the history of Juneteenth. Support Black-owned businesses and organizations. Attend local Juneteenth celebrations and learn about Black culture. Have conversations about race and work towards dismantling systemic racism.

The intention has never been to dictate or limit the exploration of the Black experience, but to bring to the public’s attention important developments that merit emphasis." "Black artists of all generes — poets, writers, visual artists, and dancers — have historically served as change agents through their crafts." As we start this month, please note that it is in commemoration of a royal legacy of innovators, thought leaders, pioneers, change makers and change movement gatekeepers whose resiliency preserved against explict oppressions and yet, although minimized and often overlooked, have had a significant historical impact to these United States of America. Honoring #BlackHistoryMonth! As we kick off February, we want to commend the rich tapestry of African American heritage, culture, and achievements that have shaped history. For 2024, the theme of Black History Month is “African Americans and the Arts.” To recognize this year’s theme as we continue our focus on fostering an inclusive environment and growing in our journey of allyship, Breaktime will be starting a movie club that focuses on a film on Black history. At the end of the month, we’ll be hosting a happy hour to have a thoughtful discussion on the film and discuss ways we can amplify the voices of the African American community. Throughout the month, we’ll also be showcasing the brilliance of Black poets and their contributions to literature. Internally, we’ll be sharing the works of these poets to deepen our understanding and appreciation for their work in Black history. Together, let’s make Black History Month a time of reflection, education, and unity.
