Six major #trends that could shape tourism in the future: ⬇ 🔻 #regenerativetourism aims to allow visitors to have a positive impact on their vacation #destination, whether it's the local economy, landscapes, or #biodiversity. This type of tourism seeks to contribute actively to environmental revitalization, such as participating in tree-planting projects, improving waste management, or supporting local flora and fauna. 🔻 A number for a challenge: According to the United Nations, approximately 7 out of 10 people will live in cities by 2050, accounting for 68% of the world's population, compared to the current 55%. The most pessimistic scenario, "World Archipelago," envisions a world where climate urgency is not adequately addressed, leading to a significant reduction in international tourists to 30 million for France in 2040. This approach challenges us to think about how we can make our travels more responsible and enriching, not just for ourselves but for the communities and environments we visit. 🌐 Societal relevance: in a world facing ecological challenges and societal tensions, reflective tourism offers a unique lens to understand and engage with these issues. It's a call to action for us as travelers to be more aware of our impact and to contribute positively to the places we visit. 🏛️ Learning from history: the paper highlights how memory sites like concentration camps and memorials can be integral to reflective tourism. These subtle yet impactful installations invite us to engage with history in a personal and profound way. It links very much to the Vectors of Memory developed by the LRE Foundation and Studio Libeskind. 🤔 Challenges and opportunities: implementing reflective tourism isn't without its challenges. Ensuring that its deeper meanings are understood by the public is crucial (the example of Jan Karski's scuplture-bench in Krakow, mentioned in the paper, should question us all). This aspect opens a dialogue on how we can make tourism more inclusive, informative, and transformative. Those points raise many questions: How can we, as part of the remembrance tourism community, contribute to a more reflective, responsible, and sustainable approach to tourism?
