In our quest for a sustainable future, we are guided by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a collective vision to address the world's most pressing challenges. Among these SDGs, food and agriculture have emerged as fundamental pillars, acting as linchpins that connect and influence the achievement of each goal. As we look ahead to the next six years, it becomes evident that nurturing a sustainable food system lies at the heart of building a prosperous future for all. The eradication of poverty begins with ensuring access to nutritious food and sustainable agricultural practices. By promoting agricultural innovation, supporting small-scale farmers, and investing in rural infrastructure, we can empower communities and create opportunities for economic growth.

A great new report on financing the needed step change "With greater collaboration and more coordination, particularly on financing, among all food system participants, farmers can receive the flexible financial and technical support they need to adopt sustainable production practices confidently" - with contributions from Environmental Defense Fund's Maggie Monast and Vincent Gauthier 

Many in food and agriculture understand the need to rapidly accelerate the transition to systems that build resilience, reduce climate impacts, and generate other benefits to water and biodiversity - but how do we pay for it? I'm very encouraged to see increasing momentum in discussions around financing the transition to #regenerativeagriculture that 1) center the farmer and their needs, and 2) that challenge other actors in the value chain and financial sector to contribute and collaborate. A new report out today from World Economic Forum and Bain & Company captures many of these discussions well, and offers a useful summary of how we can pursue a more holistic solution to this challenge. The report also highlights some incredible leaders, including Soil and Water Outcomes Fund, Precision Conservation Management and Growers Edge. A new report from World Economic Forum lays out a breakthrough model for financing and collaboration to support farmers and accelerate the transition to sustainable food production. Research on more than 50 U.S. regenerative agriculture programs informed the report's findings, which highlight how capital and capabilities can be coordinated and deployed more effectively to address economic, technical, and social barriers to farmer adoption. Our members Bayer, Environmental Defense Fund, Nutrien Ag Solutions, PepsiCo, and Unilever and partners Practical Farmers of Iowa and Precision Conservation Management contributed to the report. Thank you Maggie for sharing this important resource. I thought Figure 7 was particularly relevant for laying out the various actors and how they contribute to the financing stack for regenerative agriculture. I think there's a vital role for my industry to play as we accelerate broader practice adoption. I had a message from Kaj Embrén in the inbox in the spring saying: "I would like you to do a podcast together with you and the journalist from "The New Yorker" Elizabeth Kolbert" based on the article she wrote in the paper (https://lnkd.in/e_y7zGZh)". Yes you are correct, the pod is about phosphorus and was recorded almost a month ago but published today. Ragn-Sells contribute with solutions on the nutrient challenge with both phosphorus and nitrogen and by that can converts todays wastewater treatment plants into future resource plants (EasyMining innovations). But we also have solutions to collect the fish poo that both will produce energy and recirculated nutrients in Norway, enabling the fish industry to grow with a improved environmental footprint. Ragn-Sells AS are leading this innovative work that will enable the increase of foodproduction from the aquaculture, all in line with FAO prediction what is needed. FAO says we need to tripple the food production from the aquaculture in order to supply the growing population with food. By 2050 we will probably become10 billion according to UN and with growing number of cities. Proud to share this report, written by Bain and the WEF, which tackles the major issue of funding the transition to sustainable farming practices. The “breakthrough model of financing and collaboration” proposes (i) upfront payments or guarantees that mitigate economic risks for farmers; (ii) full monetization of all the ecosystem services (e.g., carbon, water, biodiversity, resilience, nutrient density) that result from regenerative agriculture, financed by all the actors that benefit from those services; and (iii) an unprecedented degree of collaboration between food system actors. The recently held #RFSIEurope24 conference brought together actors from across the ecosystem to explore how to boost and scale the much-needed regenerative transformation of agriculture and food systems. Our colleague Matteo Vanzini represented KOIS and the SoilValues project at the forum, sharing insights on: - The need to invest in life. Rather than big capital expenditure (CapEx) investment, we should focus on soil, compost, seeds, animals, and labour. All keeping lively farmers at the front and centre of what we do. - The importance of increasing deployment capacity. Through debating if we need more capital or deal flow supporting RegAg, multi-stakeholder collaboration, blended finance, and de-risking were highlighted as solutions at our disposal to better deploy the capital currently available. - The opportunity to debunk the trade-off between suitability and productivity. The regenerative transition offers a paradigm shift in which environmental stewardship and ecosystem services don’t have to come at the expense of production but can support farmers’ livelihoods and promote sustainable business models. Interesting panels also touched on reshaping supply chains, bringing regenerative products to end consumers, leveraging technology and embracing complexity and system thinking to enable long-lasting change. The World Economic Forum and Bain & Company recently published a report outlining the financing and collaboration needed to support farmers in accelerating a transition to sustainable food production. It articulates the economic, technical and social barriers to adoption — presenting ways to address each. Here are key takeaways for scaling regenerative practices, especially #agroforestry: 1. Investing in agroforestry is smart business. Financial actors can reduce their risk exposure and open up new business opportunities while turbocharging regenerative agriculture programs 2.
