I was lucky enough to attend the Downstream 2024 conference in Lower Hutt over the past two days with my colleagues Aaron Hamilton, Nick Barneveld and Aaron Hochwimmer who gave an insightful talk on sustainable and broader positive social outcomes in the energy transition. Take away messages from the individual speakers and panel discussions included: 📊 A desire to increase visibility of low voltage data concurrent with demand side flexibility to allow customers dialled in control over their residential energy uses. 💰 Another year with strong messaging around the “energy trilemma” with affordability of energy in NZ forefront of multiple conversations. 💡 An evident pivot from the oil and gas industry panelists with acknowledgement that NZ fields are past their peak production and the depleting resource has the industry looking seriously at ways to raise capital for biogas and CCUS solutions, as waste producers and industry in general looks at improving sustainability. We also heard from the new governments’ Minister of Energy and the Minister for Natural Resources. Also great to see a strong presence from the Young Energy Professionals Network.

An open letter to Ed Miliband, newly appointed Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. While we commend the new government's stated ambition to turn the UK into a clean energy superpower, we believe that more attention needs to be placed on how to decarbonise the UK's unavoidable gas demand. The UK currently consumes three times more gas than electricity by energy content. We believe biomethane produced via AD to be a proven and scalable solution to gas decarbonisation – while also presenting a key opportunity to deliver permanent GHG removals. We, therefore, encourage Labour to support the UK’s growing biomethane BECCS industry by:   - Incorporating biomethane into Labour’s clean energy strategy - Enabling biomethane plants to access the UK’s carbon storage facilities UK government

“The biggest future question is the ongoing transition in the energy industry. The ports currently play an im-portant role in imports and exports of fossil fuels as well as warehousing and distribution. The location of the ports by the sea makes them good partners e.g. for offshore wind farms as well as hydrogen and ammonia plants that need water for their production. The ports will promote the arrangement of areas required by the projects and invest in the infrastructure required by the production plants”, says Annaleena Mäkilä who acted as the CEO of the Finnish Ports Association from 2021–2024 and among the chairpersons of ESPO (European Sea Ports Organisation) from 2014–2022. On February 29, the Bulgarian Petroleum and Gas Association (BPGA) presented a vision for sustainable mobility! During the conference, Maya Blagoeva, Executive Director of V-Gas, shared that the use of propane-butane as a transitional fuel is a key solution for achieving European standards for limiting harmful emissions. Currently, the most popular and rapidly developing are hybrid systems - mixing propane-butane with air or with green hydrogen.

With an eye on net-zero goals, shipping companies are actively seeking lower-emission fuel mixes to run their fleets. e-NG can significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to conventional fuels, offering operating expense benefits to shipping companies.
