The Broadcom Blues Why does one company decide to acquire another company? Typically, it’s based on culture, innovation, synergy and overall growth or your company (1+1=4). Then there Broadcom, that looks at a potential purchase like a “Parts Car” - just an engine, transmission, body parts and so on. Now there is nothing wrong with a Parts Car style acquisition, happens all the time when a company’s best years are in the rear view. In Broadcom’s case, they started parting the car, because they couldn’t recognize the part. This led them to immediately disassemble VMware, with Horizon and End-User-Computing line castoff into technological purgatory. Forcing Horizon customers to scamper to another platform. However, in VMware case, Broadcom as hardware manufacture failed to recognize its true value – VMware was a Tech company with an emphasis on the innovation, research and development “Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door” strategy. To be innovative, companies have to be open, reaching outside the of their parental structure. When VMware was plugged into the Broadcom collective, you immediately began to observe access to resources narrowing and employees become less open. Broadcom has backed off a bit since customers and the community began to squeal under its weight of its questionable actions. There is where Broadcom has revealed its non-nonsense and more disciplined culture which is often at odds with VMware’s more flexible one. From my perspective, almost nothing Broadcom has executed (except VCF) has been positive. I attended a VMware Private AI brief (a core justification to stay with VMware) but it mysteriously turned into a Broadcom hardware sales meeting. This led us to believe that the NVIDIA partnership (and possible every other one) is in jeopardy. Meanwhile all of us were locked out (and still locked out) of every category in Broadcom’s new customer portal. Leaving customers with no ability to download software, open a case or view software entitlements. Access will be denied until Broadcom determines what customers own and what they owe in subscription costs (father know best). Whatever the outcome is for VMware, this acquisition has opened new opportunities for startups and competitors alike. #vmware #broadcom #privatecloud #nvidia #horizon

Who remembers Meg Whitman bidding adieu to HPE, Microsoft crowning Satya Nadella as CEO, the blockbuster acquisition of LinkedIn for a cool $26.2 billion? Who could forget the split of HP into HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, or the headline-making move when Dell scooped up EMC Corporation? So here's to an unexpected trip down memory lane! In a surprising turn, Dell Technologies saw a dramatic $30 billion drop in valuation within the first hour of Friday trading. Despite surpassing revenue expectations ($22.24B vs. $21.64B) and slightly beating EPS estimates ($1.27 vs. $1.26), investors were rattled by flat operating profits from AI server sales. This segment, which grew 42% to $5.5B, failed to deliver convincing margins, signaling a struggle to stay competitive without sacrificing profits. Dell’s YTD gain shrank from 140% to 70% amid this intense selloff.

Yesterday, I shared an older story I wrote about Hewlett Packard Enterprise a year ago by mistake. LOL. Fortunately it was prescient, by forecasting growth in the #SASE market and pointing to the strength of intelligent edge. Some people have said this tie-up with Juniper Networks is about #telecom, which I find entertaining. Service provider is flat and in secular decline. #Multicloud means that traffic is moving toward colocation and the edge, away from service provider center of gravity (unless you are a #CDN or #ISP and can monetize that traffic). Enterprises want to take control of their data. This is Antonio Neri 's big bet to double down on intelligent edge and Rami Rahim. Double down on the thing you have that's been working and growing 50% y/y. After a few days of mulling it over, this is where I'm at and it seems to make sense.
