Wondering what you can do with your PhD? Here's one question that can help change the way you think about your job search: 🟢What energizes and motivates you? You had interests prior to landing in graduate school. What you found in academia was a space to pursue these interests. But they are NOT defined by your academic discipline. When you answer the question, if you say something specific like, "I'm motivated by this really specific subject matter expertise" then you're thinking too narrow. Your subject matter expertise is not the interest. That's what you are studying BECAUSE OF a larger interest. If you say your interests are in working with undergraduates, consider if you're limiting your options because you've only worked in higher ed. You might find that you can mentor and advise people in other contexts, and find similar satisfaction. Too many PhDs are afraid that leaving academia means giving up the things they love. Remember: your degree doesn't define who you are. Your degree is the thing you are pursuing because of who you are.

When I was a PhD student and ECR I had so many questions, and not about my PhD, but about academia in general – What is a conference good for? How do you get a job? How do you get promoted? Is it good to apply for grants? How do you know if a journal is good? How do I learn about a new theoretical framework? Getting sessional work, and later getting a job, doesn’t automatically mean someone knows the intricacies of the academy. One of my favourite aspects of being the director of graduate studies at multiple universities, and now being a mid-career researcher, is getting to sit down with graduate researchers and ECRs to talk about these questions, and help them make career and research plans. We always talk about the importance of mentorship, but that can go beyond what someone is researching. If you have the time to sit down with PhD researchers and ECRs you should – I know I would have appreciated every insight and piece of knowledge about the academy that was on offer when I was starting out.

Are you thinking about doing a PhD? You might encounter a 'generation gap' between you and your supervisors. In the past, getting a PhD was a lifelong endeavour that culminated in a book, nowadays it's a specific career step, typically based on articles. Arjenne Louter tells you all about it. 𝐑𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 Times have changed, presenting their own challenges: less than 15% of PhD students finish up in four years, and after five years, approximately half of them have wrapped up their thesis. But don't let this discourage you; pursuing a PhD can be immensely rewarding. You'll learn a great deal, delve deeply into a subject, and unleash your creativity. It's a good idea to talk with other PhD students to get a good idea of what lies ahead. 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 How do you ensure that you do succeed and finish up on time? By not only focusing on the content of your research, but also on how to go about doing your PhD, the process. If you concentrate on that, the content will naturally follow, allowing you to make a valuable contribution to science.
