Teacher Appreciation Week may be over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate our teachers all year round! This week we are going to share a few ways that you can brighten a teacher’s day. The first way is to simply say, "Thank you!" This one simple phrase can warm a teacher’s heart in surprising ways. When students stop and look their teacher in the eye to express their gratitude, it lets the educator know that what they’re doing means something. #nwef #education #parentsofinsta #momsofinsta #teachersofinsta #school #teacherappreciation #teachers

Young people are exposed to so much more information than generations before. In turn, they may be having life-changing experiences that they are not able to process and talk to anyone about. It is up to us to help them prepare and better understand some of the issues that they may face. So, let us invite kids to be a part of the discussion – the real discussion. This rang true for children’s book author and youth development professional Rashad Patterson who, while growing up in southwest Atlanta, saw the economic and educational disparities amongst his peers – first noticing this even during his time in elementary school. Not all his peers received the same attention, educational rigor. Rashad says this of his experience, “The teachers I had were not relatable and weren’t equipped to understand the needs of urban kids.” Rashad took those observations and turned them into a passion for relaying complex social issues into relatable and digestible stories for kids. A refreshing deviation from many children’s books that shy away from some of the very topics young people are experiencing, Rashad’s stories touch on topics involving colorism, abandonment, and racial profiling. He has published six books, been a guest on several nationally recognized podcasts, and has been invited to speak at almost a dozen metro Atlanta public schools. Keenly drawn to examine societal issues around inequality, Rashad received his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Georgia State University and studied Computer Information Systems at Chattanooga Tech. His studies in both helped him understand the relationship between knowledge and access. In addition to authoring his series of children’s books Rashad works closely with movement leaders and civic partners. Through book giveaways, distribution of school supplies to metro Atlanta students, and free holiday gift cards to single moms, Rashad continues to be an active part of his community. He has also partnered with the organization, Engineering for Kids, where he introduces students to the six stages of the engineering design process while executing projects based off the lessons. Here, Rashad incorporates his sociology and tech background teaching kids the importance of STEM while having discussions around life choices, integrity, and preparing them for a brighter future.
