SUNDAY AM UPDATE: Refresh fore more…Disney continues to keep the shine on its 20th Century Studios brand with their fingerprints on their storied franchises as Alien:Romulus settles with $41.5M, the second highest opening ever in the 45-year old franchise and the highest opening ever for genre-meister Fede Alvarez and star Cailee Spaeny. Global start is way above where we were seeing it at $108.2M, but domestic is exactly where we called it. For a minute there with some 20th Century Studios fare outside of Avatar, it looked shakey, read last falls New Regency original and sublime sci-fi title The Creator collapsing with a $14M opening (granted, there were the actors strikes). But with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes‘ great $58.4M start and $171.1M domestic, $397.3M global haul, it’s clear the Steve Asbell led label has its cards in order. This latest Alien by Alvarez gives this storied franchise new life with new blood to keep its teeth sharp for the near future.

On this day in 2004, Dino Crisis celebrated its 5th Anniversary. 🦖 To ensure momentum remained for the franchise, Capcom subsequently released a double pack of 1 and 2, a third disc full of developer interviews, as well as a collection of the FMVs. This collection was exclusive to Japan only. Dino Crisis was a critical and commercial success, with the PlayStation version selling over 2.4 million copies, followed by Dino Crisis 2 selling 1.2 million copies. Keeping Capcom in mind, its remakes of IP classics such as the Resident Evil franchise have further bolstered the company's revenue. For example, the remake of Resident Evil 4 has netted 7.02 million units across its lifetime, bringing that franchise's total performance to 36.29 million copies sold across past and current platforms. So, why are remakes and remasters the main drive of the previous and current gen? 💡To modernise a classic by making it more accessible, both in terms of playability and go-into-a-shop-and-buy-it-ability. 📈 To reinvigorate interest in a series ahead of a potential relaunch. 🕹 Evoking nostalgia, allowing players to revisit the fond memories associated with the original titles. Will Capcom continue this trend and will we ever see a Dino Crisis Remake? We can only hope. 🙏

Peter Cancro was just 18 years old when he acquired Jersey Mike's. Today, he's grown that single sub shop to 2,400+ units nationwide: Peter Cancro was 14 years old when he first got a job at Jersey Mike's Subs in Point Pleasant, NJ in 1968. The original shop was a local gold mine. In today’s dollars, it was generating $100,000 per week in revenue! But in 1971, as a high school senior, he discovered the owner was looking to sell the business. Peter decided he wanted to buy it and skip college – so he started going DOOR-TO-DOOR to raise money to acquire the biz from his boss (incredible ambition!) He ended up raising $125k (roughly ~$890k in today’s dollars), the majority of which came from his former football coach, and was ultimately able to acquire the business. Peter Cancro has been leading Jersey Mike’s ever since, which now boasts 2,400+ locations, and is the undisputed #1 sub franchise in America. In the last handful of years, every stat imaginable has trended positively: • Revenue per location has increased ~70% • Unit growth has compounded (+730 from Jan 2020-2023) • Average unit volume has grown to $1,220,974 as of the end of 2022 A current franchisee credits Cancro and his franchisor leadership team for the success the brand is having. Here's what the franchisee said of what people say to him about Jersey Mike's: "Whenever I tell people I’m a part of Jersey Mike’s, I hear “OHHH I LOVE Jersey Mike’s (or my Kids LOVE Jersey Mike’s), we eat there like 3 times a week. I don't hear that often about any other brand. Even folks that eat at Subway 3x a week, they are reluctant to admit it. " What a time to be a Jersey Mike's franchisee! Building a brand that drives that kind of positive emotion + endorsement from customers is a great north star for any franchisor and franchisee.
