I know I've posted a lot about my memoir recently, but this update is pretty special. Last Thursday, I had the honor of speaking to doctors and medical students at Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital about ambiguity and humanity in medicine, from a parent's perspective. For 1st/2nd Gens, what actions and/or inactions around accessing medical care (or any care) that COULD be perceived as resistance, non-compliance or apathy may actually be rooted in lack of support, lack of access (e.g. cultural, language barriers), fear, intergenerational trauma, limited information around certain options, etc. It's so important to look BEYOND our skin (name of the conference) and BEYOND the surface, the immediate actions to help improve 1st and 2nd generation's access to care. When I get to speak in front of professionals about how Intergenerational Trauma and being in The Repay Cycle™, can show up in different ways for 1st/2nd Gens it makes me excited. I am excited to see what we can do to create impact on large and small scales. It was such a great experience discussing ways to strengthen how we can take care of 1st/2nd gens through different lens, and to connect with such great folks with a desire to help others. “Making Death Casual” should be my tagline. Most people don’t want to discuss mortality, but it’s one of my favorite topics. When I talk about death, I’m really talking about life. Yesterday I spent the morning at the Emory University School of Medicine. A pulmonologist I love, Dr. Linnemann, was giving a lecture on cystic fibrosis (CF) and asked if I’d join her to give the medical school students a glimpse into my life. I said yes, of course. It’s fulfilling to share my experience with others, especially when it helps connect the name of a disease to an actual human. Sometimes, in medical settings, you can feel like you’re only your diagnosis—not a person with an entire life beyond the exam room. During the lecture, we talked about my childhood and what it was like to learn I should die young. Dr. Linnemann also discussed the latest medical breakthroughs and how, while exciting, the medications aren’t perfect and don’t benefit everyone with CF. Afterward, a few students came up to ask questions. What were they most interested in? The life expectancy piece. How was it to process that information as a kid? What’s it like now that recent medical developments have extended the life expectancy? How do you deal with that? Thank you Pulse--voices from the heart of medicine for publishing my piece. The prompt was “on being different,” which immediately made me want to write about how much I feel we are all fundamentally similar. My Shared Experience: A diagnosis, a difficult (perhaps unwanted) gift. A gift that helped me find more joy, more compassion, and more opportunity to connect with patients. After all, we are all people facing challenges trying to find hope, strength, and courage despite them. We all feel different, which is what makes us the same. In medicine, this constant reminder keeps me humble and aware.
