Professionals talk logistics.’” Uh, well, as creatives whose job description is to pull through strategy (here, execution=logistics), we’re the pros. Not that Marketing, “the strategists” don’t contribute their fair share to the marketing, sales, and communication efforts of a company, but without us creative professionals, great ideas would never make it out of the meeting room. So the next time your team is excluded from upstream marketing planning sessions or, worse, doesn’t get the credit they deserve for a successful marketing initiative, remember Bradley’s quote, screw up your courage, and advocate for your team. You’re the group that gets sh*$t done!

I’ve always thought I had a terrible name for a brand and communications strategist. A Deal should be selling something! — but it just occurred to me that brand strategy is essentially deal-making. Clients send me to talk with customers to find out what they really want. Sort of a trusted intermediary. My job is to then to dig around to figure out what my client can credibly offer that meets the clients desires and would be motivating, and then to package up the offer. Enough customer desire and relevant benefit from the client and a deal can be struck. If not…the customer moves along to find someone else to help them. ps - A lot better than my early career in politics where it was just as often about threatening to take away something someone wanted to hold on to…and where unfortunately the same basic process of finding leverage applied.

I need your expert opinion on this... Someone recently sent me a job application to look through. It was for a Content marketing specialist position, which is great right? Imagine my confusion when I saw that the role required the applicant to do "PR and Stakeholder Management". Please correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this sound off-brand for a content marketer? The JD went on to describe this particular role to mean: - Develop relationships with relevant media outlets and pitch stories to gain positive press coverage (I slightly understand the pitching stories part) - Ability to manage crisis and stakeholders (👀) - Organize and participate in industry networking events; to connect with regulators, potential customers & partners (I understand attending the events but organizing them? 😓 ) What do you think? Is this totally normal or is this yet again another case of overloading marketers with tasks that are unrealistic and unrelated to their specific role?

As a newly hired marketing leader, you know the least in the room. Step one is listening, not action. You may see opportunities you believe are a slam dunk, but you don't know the context they are/were in when they set it up. Here's how to not put your foot in your mouth: 1. Understand what the business is ultimately trying to accomplish WHY are you here? Clearly align on the root problem you were brought in to solve. 2. Understand the systems as they are today WHAT is the context you are stepping into? There's a reason the website, sales process, ad structure, creative etc. are set up the way they are. Understand it before you make large changes 3. Agree on the solution before taking action There will be time to fire-from-the-hip later. The first real action step should be agreed upon by key stakeholders to build trust and rapport. Ensure they understand and agree on: - What success looks like - Expectations of them (the leader) and the rest of the team - Timelines - Resources need (time, skills, budget) - KPIs to show the plan is working and we're on track. #marketingstrategy
