Did you know that African Americans have played an important part in the history of cooperatives? African Americans have used cooperation as an effective tool against discrimination, and mutual aid societies founded by African Americans were some of the first documented cooperatives in America. From the Underground Railroad to the Colored Farmers’ National Alliance and Co-operative Union, cooperatives became an important source for civil rights activism which in turn created more cooperatives. During February, we celebrate Black History Month, but it's important to appreciate the resilience and richness of Black culture year-round. October marks the start of Black History Month here in the UK. This is an important time to celebrate and honour the achievements and contributions of Black Britons throughout history. For generations, Black communities have helped shape British culture and society. From sports and music, to science and politics, Black trailblazers have made an immense impact, often while facing prejudice and injustice. During October, take time to learn about essential figures like Mary Seacole, who nursed wounded soldiers during the Crimean War, and Claudia Jones, who founded Britain's first Black newspaper. Appreciate the work of more recent changemakers like Baroness Doreen Lawrence, OBE, who campaigns for racial justice after the murder of her son Stephen. Black History Month is also an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing fight against racism in the UK. While progress has been made, discrimination still prevents many from reaching their full potential.
