🌈 Did you know that International Transgender Day of Visibility is March 31? This month, we have the opportunity to uplift transgender individuals across the world and bring light to the struggles they continue to face. 🏳️⚧️ Did you know that transgender individuals are more likely to be discriminated against due to their gender identity? Research finds that one in five transgender individuals share that they have been denied housing due to their identity, and one in ten share that they have been evicted due to their identity. Are you looking to promote transgender and LGBTQ+ rights at your PHA? Consider following in Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority's footsteps. Staff at CMHA receive training on LGBTQ+ challenges and rights that highlight the importance of using inclusive language and supporting all residents. Asking for someone's pronouns and ensuring they are correctly reflected in their resident profile is a simple way to promote equity and access to fair housing. 🤲 Together, we can help promote fair, safe, and accessible housing for everyone. 👉 To learn more about equity for transgender individuals: https://lnkd.in/gzsXsCAG #AffordableHousing #Equity #TransDayOfVisibility

“Intersectionality is key to helping people feel they belong. Organisations need to be more mindful of the broader demographic and wider characteristics of their LGBTQ+ colleagues. Are they black? Do they have a visible or invisible disability? Are they over 50? One or more of these other protected characteristics, along with someone’s sexuality, compound and complicate how they may be included, or not, at work and in society in general. Intersectionality is so, so important. By simply focusing on one protected characteristic, we risk missing out on other aspects where understanding and tolerance are needed. For example, a trans colleague who has autism may feel accepted for their sexuality but misunderstood or marginalised due to their autism if that, too, isn’t recognised. Recently, I hosted an LGBTQ+ conference in partnership with TalkTalk and found I was the only black person in the room. That is neither right nor representative of a diverse society. We need to do better. An organisation’s networks can help broaden understanding and tolerance by inviting a wider range of members, including allies, to share their experience and bring support.” #IDAHOBIT #InclusiveCompanies

LGBTQ+ Domestic Violence Awareness Day is an initiative that is close to my heart. I recommend making the pledge to create change to help stamp out domestic violence in LGBTQ+ communities. Victims of domestic violence often stay silent about what's going on for a long time. Participating in a pledge helps to raise awareness, but also gives people a sign that they don't have to suffer in silence. This includes people who are already carrying experiences of marginalisation and discrimination, like many in the LGBTQIA+ community. Advice based on my lived experience: 😶 Don’t ever assume someone is okay. They may be trying hard to appear as okay, when they’re not. 🤔 Instead, use your instincts, check on others, show kindness and empathy and be there for those around you. 🦺 Do your part to contribute to a safe environment, as sometimes workplaces can be the only safe place for victims. Read up on how you can contribute to psychological safety.
Tuesday 28 May marks LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Day 💜 Join over 1,300 people in taking the pledge to change the conversation around domestic, family and intimate partner violence within LGBTQ+ communities. 🏳️🌈 In a noteworthy article on Advocate.com, Denise Spivak, CEO of CenterLink, emphasized the significant impact of LGBTQ community centers, stating: 'LGBTQ community centers collectively serve over 51,800 people each week, or nearly 2.7 million people per year. Without support and funding from federal and local governments, millions of Americans could be left struggling to find culturally competent life-saving programs that allow them to live authentically and safely.'" 🌟 🌈 As the election approaches, Denise Spivak's quote underscores the critical importance of government support for LGBTQ organizations and centers. The outcome of the election could significantly influence funding and policies affecting the availability of life-saving programs and resources for the LGBTQ community. 🤝 To support LGBTQ centers amid potential funding challenges, individuals can advocate for LGBTQ rights, support candidates prioritizing LGBTQ issues, and participate in voter education and mobilization efforts. Every vote and voice is crucial in ensuring continued support for LGBTQ organizations. 🔗 CenterLink and its member centers play essential roles in providing vital services and resources to LGBTQ individuals and communities. In times of political uncertainty, their advocacy efforts become even more critical in safeguarding the rights and well-being of the LGBTQ community. 📢 We invite you to share your thoughts on the impact of government support for LGBTQ organizations and centers in the comments below. 🏳️🌈 💻 Our SAMbot project reveals that content related to LGBTQ+ rights was correlated with online abuse and some of the highest periods of engagement during the 2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election. 🔎 Our latest findings point to a concerning trend in abusive anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric emerging at the forefront of Canadian political conversations. This is also a trend supported by our past research. 📑 Dive deeper into these and other findings by visiting the Samara Centre’s latest SAMbot project: Engagement and Abuse on Toronto's Digital Campaign Trail: The 2023 Toronto Mayoral By-election Report. 📒➡️ https://lnkd.in/gnrS-Xwe

For many families with LGBTQ kids, the dark times are now. More than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills were considered in state legislatures in 2023, and 84 passed. (The term “LGBTQ” refers to lesbian, gay, and other people with minority sexual orientations and gender identities.) These bills restrict discussions of LGBTQ people or history in schools, limit legal protections for queer and transgender youth, and prohibit transgender health care for minors and even adults. The sheer volume of these bills, and the sentiment behind them, is doing harm. An estimated 71 percent of LGBTQ youths—including 86 percent of transgender and nonbinary kids—say that laws concerning LGBTQ people have had a negative impact on their mental health. According to the ILGA-Europe's Raimbow Map, Italy ranks 35th out of 49 in Europe for LGBTQ+ equality. Progress and criticalities in the protection of LGBTQ+ rights are highlighted. To bridge this gap, Italy needs to enact laws against gender identity discrimination, legalise same-sex marriage, simplify the gender recognition process for transgender individuals, and combat hate speech. #MAATProject #InclusiveCities #SocialJustice #GenderEquity

Happy Pride Month! This month, we celebrate the countless decades of activism, courage, and community LGBTQ+ individuals bring to their families, workplaces, and society as a whole. While progress has been made to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, from same-sex marriage to gender-affirming healthcare, these rights are constantly being attacked from homophobic and transphobic lawmakers and enforcers. The ACLU tracks anti-LGBTQ+ proposed legislation around the country (see the link below). Currently over 515 bills have been proposed that would limit how queer and trans people live their lives. In the face of hate, many cities and states have stood up to declare themselves as sanctuaries for the transgender community. Other states have passed gender-affirming care protections for trans and nonbinary individuals. This Pride Month, there are several different ways to support your local LGBTQ+ community. Use the link below to see what bills may be proposed in your state as well as what protections are in place. Attend and support local Pride events. Find ways to stay updated on current queer events and organizing opportunities that go beyond the month of June.
