Join us Monday, 3/11, 6-8pm for the second event in our three-part series, "Forced Labor in Supply Chains," stemming from the Design for Freedom initiative. The program examines our responsibility as planners and designers in choosing ethically sourced materials for our built environment. In our second event: "Forced Labor in Supply Chains: Modeling Tangible Examples of a Humanely Built Environment," we will hear from architects who have realized Design for Freedom’s first pilot projects. The goal is to gain valuable insights into the challenges and successes they encountered in the process of designing and building with ethically sourced materials, so that other practitioners on their own journey towards forced-labor free supply chains can learn from them. After an inspiring event at Carlton University, organized by Sheryl Boyle and with amazing speakers Cooper Lane from Brave, Steve Powney from ABB, Joshua Miller from Porsche Consulting, and Philippe Fleischmann from ETH, I can't help but wonder how the role of the architect will change as our industry undergoes industrialization and productization. If we want to take the housing crisis seriously, we can't keep designing individual buildings as if they were tailored suits or custom motorbikes (I believe Daniel Davis made that analogy once). We are on the brink of a transformative shift – from crafting one-off structures to designing customizable product families. 🤖 At Intelligent City, we've developed a groundbreaking product platform for mass timber urban housing. Our architects are no longer solely focused on designing and managing individual projects; they're designing a product family of buildings, with each project customized while based on a shared design logic. 🏗️ This evolution is not just about buildings; it's about reimagining how we shape our cities and communities. It's about sustainability, efficiency, and adaptability. It's about delivering innovative solutions that benefit everyone. But change is hard, especially in construction. 💡 So, as we venture into this exciting future, let's embrace the opportunity to redefine our profession, foster collaboration, and drive positive change. We architects add something to the city with every work we do.This is a huge responsiblity.Undoubtedly, there is an account being given, and you give that account every day.But the fate of every architectural structure is revealed after it is used. As I said, as an architect, my biggest principle until the last moment of my life is to leave value to the world Architecture is a whole that needs to be nourished in every field, together with culture, art and many other units; Within this whole, it is not necessary to channel only art, economy, engineering, technology, or only the science of architecture within itself.All of these areas should be gathered in a single line, blended.Because architecture is a profession that is open to movement in the developing world; It requires inexhaustible research and development. We were barely trying to find something in the library of the university inherited from Noah Nebi.Young architects who grew up in this generation must travel, see, research, dream, read and understand, from the moment they decide to embark on this road. If this profession is done with pleasure, the perception of the person will progress based on it.Therefore, architects and prospective architects will make selections in every place they go, in every book they read, in every movie they watch, in every museum, park and building they visit, with the return of this perception, while shaping their imagination in their inner world, they will blend their knowledge and reflect it on every line they create. If this job becomes a lifestyle, a hobby, it will give pleasure to the person and lead him to success. We are honored to share that Canada Council for the Art has selected MODA as the recipient of the 2023 Prix de Rome in Architecture Prize. This Prize is awarded to a young practitioner of architecture or an architectural firm that has completed their first built works and has demonstrated exceptional artistic potential. With this prize, the recipient may travel abroad to develop their skills and their creative practice, and to strengthen their position in the international architecture world. Inspired by the Prix de Rome in architecture, which was created in the 18th century and helped young architects train in Italy, the Prix de Rome in Architecture – Professional was established in Canada in 1987 in pursuit of a more outward-looking vision towards the world. While, as a profession, we are actively exploring how contemporary concerns related to affordability, equity, diversity, inclusiveness and environmental sustainability hold the potential to reshape the ‘methods’ in which we approach design, we feel that the ‘means’ in which we construct our physical environment are often taken as a given and outside the agency of architecture. As such, we feel that this ‘blind spot’ demands further inquiry, not only with respect to the disruptive potential of robotics at the scale of architecture, but also the generational opportunity for architects to perhaps re-enter the world of ‘making’; a PAST/forward if you will to a time when architects “leveraged the benedictions of science and technology towards the betterment of society.” (quote by Reinier de Graaf - OMA) Over the next couple of weeks we will unpack PAST/forward by way of first introducing some of the problems or challenges inherent within the current paradigms of constructing our built environments, followed by various innovations or new trajectories with respect to disruptive construction technologies; namely robotic fabrication at the scale of architecture... please stay tuned!

Conversations with architects can often be more confusing than illuminating. But in this recent chat, global architect Chris Bosse shares great insights about the evolution of architecture in the past two decades.
