What is broken in US healthcare today is much less about individual "villains" and much more about bad systems. Which can be frustrating, because villains are fun to talk about and could be so much simpler to fix. I was invited to be a guest lecturer last night at the California College of the Arts Graduate Interaction Design program to talk about "Artists Remaking Medicine. I loved sharing with the students about design, art, imagination, and all the many ways our healthcare systems fail today. In the description for Pia Z.'s smart course, she writes "Complex systems have many actors and dependencies that are inherently dynamic in constant change, and they can only be understood by description of their connections. The design of systems is about mapping the flow of interactions and context, exploring the possible inputs and outputs, and crafting a design response that is useful, appropriate and robust." I love that last phase of "useful, appropriate, and robust" when thinking about what is possible in healthcare systems transformation. The students in her class were so smart and curious about mental health, maternal health, hospital design, healthcare costs, nursing...it gave me great hope for the future!
