Inclusion
I’m honoured to have a number of people within the CALD/CARM community that I work with, have been on Boards with, that I have employed, promoted, advocated for and made space for.
I don’t need to be their voice - I need to listen to them, hear them, amplify their voice and set them up for success.
For me, the key for all types of inclusion is to actively seek out people who don’t look and feel like me. I want to be around people who I expect to challenge me, give them permission to voice their opinions and genuinely thank them when they do - especially when those views are difficult for me to hear.
As a female in male dominated industries, I know first hand how ineffective it is to have sessions for targeted groups to teach them how to get ahead - as if they aren’t already doing more than their counterparts to demonstrate their competence! No amount of performance can get me into the C-suite when the CEO is looking for a person who reminds them of themselves at that age (yes I’ve heard those words).
So don’t ask minorities to attend extra events or give them morning teas with cupcakes, it’s the leaders’ responsibility to make the changes, not theirs.
How do YOU build a diverse and inclusive team?
Culturally and racially marginalised (CARM) women are undervalued and overlooked when it comes to leadership in Australian organisations, but why is this so, and what can organisations do to address this?
Today on World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, we're sharing insights from our CARM women in leadership research, which reveals answers to enable organisations to take action.
