🗣️🗣️The category is toxic positivity. 🗣️🗣️ 🙌🏾🙌🏾 I grew up in the Baptist church and I was saying “Amen” and “Preach” during this podcast with University of Pennsylvania Professor Adam Grant and Harvard Medical School Psychologist Susan David as they discussed “toxic positivity.” 👂🏽Give it a listen but here were my 3 biggest takeaways. 🤦🏾♀️ When we avoid difficult conversations and emotions, we stay in a “world that lacks wisdom and learning because we are unable to go through the discomfort of a real challenging conversation.” 😌 When we avoid difficult conversations, we are saying that “MY comfort is more important than YOUR reality.” 🌞 “Optimism is born of a willingness to show up to the reality, a belief that the future can be better and it involves a willingness to put in the WORK to create that future vs merely a forced ‘just-be-positive’ mantra.” 🎧 Here is the Apple Podcast link to the episode! As a coach this habit really hits home. It is the basis for how I approach my work with my clients. I seek first to understand. To understand their world, their perspective, their values and beliefs. I love how Covey uses stories to demonstrate the power of empathic listening and the transformations that are possible as a result. Reviewing this habit has reinforced just how important listening at all levels is and has reminded me that I have room to continue to get better at this critical skill. It was great exploring this habit with my colleagues Lynne Brannigan and Elaine Wright. Are there relationships in your life that aren’t what you’d like them to be? Are there misunderstandings, lack of trust, discomfort or similar elements at play? Would you entertain the idea that the solution may lie in better listening? One insight I had from studying Habit 5 is that most of my problems are related to me having it backwards. In those areas I’m trying to be understood first, then to understand. How does it look to you for your problem areas? We all have things we want to do and achieve. But in getting there, we all face an obstacle we need to learn to overcome — ourselves.  We can end up taking fewer risks and maybe even turning down opportunities because our inner critic tells us we can’t do it or we’re not enough.  The worst part is that lots of us don't even realise this is happening. It's so easy to create excuses and narratives about ourselves that we fail to see we're already buying into the inner critic's voice.  In this You Are Not a Frog Podcast episode, Dr Claire Kaye explains how confidence is built within. Why does it feel so hard and intimidating to communicate boundaries? It’s because of the MEANING we assign to setting these boundaries. We often feel that boundaries damage relationships when the truth is that the purpose of communicating boundaries is the opposite: to improve relationships and create win-win interactions. Wouldn’t you like to know if you have violated someone else’s boundaries? Many times people don’t even know what our boundaries are, and if we don’t communicate these transparently, we continue enabling the pattern of crossing them. This leads to resentment on our part and miscommunication. The first question to ask ourselves when someone has crossed a boundary is: are we respecting that boundary ourselves? Let them... Let others be, do, act, think, feel- all on their own. When we release the illusion of control over other people, it’s really not about the other people it’s about us. I know I’m in a better place when I’m not trying to figure out what in the world is going on in the brains of other people and trying to anticipate their wants and their needs and what they’re going to say, and then trying to fix it. "Let Them" is a strategy popularized by coach/author/speaker Mel Robbins. I talk about how this has been used in my life, why its helpful and how you can incorporate "let them" into your daily life and relationships too. Here's the thing about New Year's resolutions. Most people start out really motivated. But by February, they tend to give up. The reason why people don't tend to stick to their resolutions is because they try to do too much. They put so much on their plate and they don't have an actionable plan to execute it. So let me make this simple and give you an actionable plan to execute: Turn your New Year's resolutions into habits. Research shows us that it actually takes 60 days to form a habit, so I encourage you to start with just one habit that you'll incorporate into your daily routine. Choose one small habit that will help you reach your goal and stick to it for the next 60 days. When that one habit becomes an automatic part of your day, then you can introduce a new habit for another resolution.
