Protecting the peatlands one pineapple at a time 🍍👏 On a global scale, peatlands store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined, underscoring their significance in mitigating climate change. Indonesia is home to 36% of all tropical peatlands, lending the country a particularly important position in global conservation efforts. In 2016, the Indonesian government established Peatland Restoration Agency that is tasked to restore over 2.6 million hectares of peatland, as Indonesia has experienced a significant destruction of its peatlands in the past. That’s where solutions like the Mahkota Siak pineapples come in. Learn how local leaders like Suliza and Cindi in the Temusai Village founded Pinaloka, a business that brings new value their community’s pineapples while contributing to the protection of the surrounding peatlands. Pinaloka is supported by Lingkar Temu Kabupaten Lestari | Secretariat (LTKL), an Indonesian district government association that works to promote sustainable development that protects the environment and improves the welfare of the community. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gFxD9VxS

🐟 🌴 🇵🇭 The Philippines is among the top 10 countries with the highest mangrove deforestation rates in the world. But in coastal Iloilo City, Philippines, a successful rehabilitation project has led to the rapid regrowth of a coastal mangrove forest. Now, as a next step, the authorities are embarking on a nationwide mangrove-mapping project, which experts say would help better quantify natural capital for the archipelagic state. It could prove important in determining if a development project is a "go or no-go" given the environmental impact it could potentially cost, or in the most extreme circumstances, help calculate the compensation needed to offset the destruction caused, said Rina Rosales, a sustainable natural resource management specialist. Will putting a price tag on #mangroves help in conservation efforts? In conjunction with International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, read our latest visual story Seeing mangroves regrow by Rhick Lars Vladimer A.: https://lnkd.in/gPTGpHsa

🌍 World Environment Day: Our Land, Our Future: Generation Restoration 🌿 Today, as we celebrate World Environment Day, we turn our focus to a pressing issue: the "All Eyes on Papua" campaign. #Indigenous communities in Papua, like the Awyu in South Papua and the Moi in Southwest Papua, are courageously standing up to protect their ancestral forests from being cut down and destroyed. In a way, they are also saying: "Our Land, Our Future," because for them, these forests are not just trees; they provide food, water, and shelter, forming vital #ecosystems and cultural heritage for these communities. At GHG Actions, we realize that this is the time for us to act as the generation of restoration. We work to restore ecosystems in our field areas, but we also recognize the critical importance of preserving these forests. They are home to unique #biodiversity and play a significant role in carbon sequestration, helping to mitigate the impacts of #climatechange. We all know that deforestation threatens to release CO2, exacerbating the #climatecrisis. Beyond the environmental impact, the loss of these forests would devastate the indigenous peoples’ way of life, culture, and rights. This World Environment Day, let us amplify our support for the indigenous communities of Papua. Together, we can advocate for #sustainablepractices and honor the rights of those who have safeguarded these lands for generations. #WorldEnvironmentDay #GenerationRestoration #AllEyesOnPapua #GHGActions
