But in coastal Iloilo City, Philippines, a successful rehabilitation project has led to the rapid regrowth of a coastal mangrove forest. Now, as a next step, the authorities are embarking on a nationwide mangrove-mapping project, which experts say would help better quantify natural capital for the archipelagic state. It could prove important in determining if a development project is a "go or no-go" given the environmental impact it could potentially cost, or in the most extreme circumstances, help calculate the compensation needed to offset the destruction caused, said Rina Rosales, a sustainable natural resource management specialist. In a way, they are also saying: "Our Land, Our Future," because for them, these forests are not just trees; they provide food, water, and shelter, forming vital #ecosystems and cultural heritage for these communities.
