A lot of businesses have hired consultants to help with their sustainability commitments... Whilst there are pros and cons, good consultants and bad, I do think the pendulum is starting to swing towards internal hiring! Recently, I have spoke with a number of sustainability leaders that have become frustrated with the quality of service they are getting from consultants. My understanding is the price continues to rise and the quality of service is falling. They want to hire internal talent instead! The issue is... These leaders don't have the budget to add headcount to their team. So, the question becomes, keep the consultants that are underperforming or have no resource at all. I feel like this is going to change in 2024. 2030 deadlines are only getting closer and capital has to be put to work in the right places to achieve sustainability goals. Sustainability leaders will be making business cases to axe 3rd party resources and use that money to build internal capabilities. Of course, as a recruiter I am bias. But, I truly believe investing into hiring top talent is a no brainer in 2024. A long term approach and building a team will return value for the coming years, whereas a short term solutions could mean the business is only serving today's need and not preparing for tomorrow. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Internal vs Consultants? As sustainability matures will building internal capabilities be the alpha?🤔

Commercial Leaders have an increasingly important role to play in their organisation's ESG initiatives. And for many of them, it's becoming a priority focus. Savvy businesses are using eco-positive propositions to enhance their brand, win new business and grow their headcount and revenues. Forward Role Recruitment have partnered with Greenify to offer a sustainable talent solution to our clients that balances the environmental impact of their hires by offsetting their new hires for the first 12 months of their employment. A Greenified hire is underwritten by: ✅ 12.7 tonnes of nature based carbon offsets, ✅ 34kg of ocean-bound plastic waste captured and recycled, ✅ 8 trees planted. Let's look at why Greenifying your hires could make all the difference when it comes to talent attraction: - 85% of Brits now say they are concerned about Climate Change, - Generation Z say that they're conscious about being environmentally friendly, - One in Two employees wanting to work for an Organisation that offers 'responsible rewards' to it's staff Greenifying your hires, both Permanent & Interim, will enable your organisation to improve their ESG compliance. 💡 Over a recent breakfast chat with my elder daughter, a budding chemical engineer and recent entry to the professional arena, we had an exciting chat about whether the renewed sustainability focus will remain only to a reporting exercise, be limited to corporates, or will transcend to a conscious individual responsibility to all of us. I socialized this further with a few chats in my network, and here is an account of some critical points resonating commonly. In recent years, sustainability has evolved far beyond simple reporting and compliance. It has become a strategic imperative that influences every aspect of business and our personal lives— from product design to supply chain management and stakeholder engagement to the small initiatives we will bring into our homes through solar energy, alternate fuel, etc. 📌 Innovation and Product Design: Sustainability drives innovation by pushing companies to rethink how products are made. By focusing on sustainable materials and energy-efficient processes, businesses can reduce their environmental impact and unlock new markets and opportunities. This will further evolve for domestic use for the greater good. 📌 Employee Engagement and Culture: Embedding sustainability into corporate culture transforms it from a checklist item into a core value. This shift empowers employees, fosters a sense of purpose, and attracts top talent who want to work for a company that shares their values. This new way of life will be passed on to our professional and personal successors. 📌 Long-term Business Strategy: Companies that integrate sustainability into their strategy can mitigate risks and capitalize on opportunities associated with environmental and social changes. This foresight leads to greater resilience and adaptability in a rapidly changing world. 📌 Stakeholder Relationships: Transparency and a commitment to sustainability strengthen trust with customers, investors, and communities. This trust translates into stronger customer loyalty, more accessible access to capital, and a better overall reputation. As we discuss these aspects, we see that it is already creating future careers, which we do not even understand. By broadening our understanding of sustainability, we can uncover its true potential to drive value and make a meaningful impact. #Sustainability #BusinessStrategy #CorporateCulture #Innovation

We need to shift how employers hire for climate jobs Hiring managers are looking for what we've termed, the “Sustainability Unicorn” - someone with tenured sustainability industry experience and a sustainability academic background Why? Corporates are playing catch up and with regulations breathing down their neck, and they’re panicking They react by putting together job descriptions as wishlists, rather than a realistic job description, outlining a role that is actually 2 or 3 roles, rolled into one As a result, they;re turning their back on a lot of great talent out there that doesn’t fit this traditional ”Unicorn” mould We hear this from Recruiters all the time that they constantly need to lower expectations and search differently to avoid unicorns, and instead look for hiring more dynamically Dynamic hiring is the shift we need Especially focusing on upskilling and microcredentials to get to the key skills required to ACTUALLY succeed in a sustainability role We know this from our upcoming Whitepaper research on the Future of the Climate Workforce from… ...30+ interviews with Sustainability Leaders ...40+ whitepapers, articles and reports reviewed ...4 sectors covered (Energy, Professional Services, Finance, Fashion) More to come as we further build out hiring & development, but what do you think about this model? If you're an employer or hiring manager, let me know in the comments. ~~~~~~~~ Want to access the upcoming whitepaper? Tag yourself below and I can follow up to get you registered for early access.
