Jennifer Darcangelo and Bronwynn Lloyd have a passion for #giving and they have special skills to lend. The two cultural resource specialists gave more than three weeks of their time last year — Jennifer in #Germany and Bronwynn in #Poland — through the Alta Heritage Foundation helping the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency on archaeological excavation missions to locate material or evidence that could help identify missing U.S. Aircrew from World War II. They were seeking answers and closure for families they likely will never meet. For their generosity and #volunteerism, they earned this year’s Mielke Award for Outstanding Community Service and a place among our #PGEChampions.

Every year on the 14th of June, the United States celebrates the Stars and Stripes with the annual holiday of Flag Day. Though Flag Day may not be quite as popular or widely celebrated as Independence Day or other patriotic holidays, it does commemorate an important day in history. It celebrates the birthday of the Stars and Stripes, which was officially adopted as the national flag of the United States on this day in 1777. When we honor our flag, we honor what we stand for as a nation- Freedom, Equality, Justice and Hope. #FWGSolutions #TeamFWG #FlagDay2024 # USARMY #USNAVY #USAIRFORCE

Understanding Our History is Important: Happy Memorial Day Reflecting on our past provides valuable insights for our future. Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day began as a day to honor those lost in the Civil War. As history unfolded and the United States faced new challenges, this day evolved to commemorate all American military personnel who sacrificed their lives in conflicts, including World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and more recent engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan. For many years, Memorial Day was observed on May 30th, the date chosen by General Logan for the first Decoration Day. However, in 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed, establishing Memorial Day as the last Monday in May to create a long weekend for federal employees. This change took effect in 1971, officially marking Memorial Day as a federal holiday. Just as we honor and remember those who have come before us, we can apply the same principles in our business and personal lives. Acknowledging past experiences and learning from them is crucial for future success and growth. Let us use this Memorial Day not only to remember the sacrifices made by many but also to reflect on how understanding our history can guide us in building a better future. Happy Memorial Day. #memorialday #remember #history Source: History.com

This #MemorialDay, let's celebrate and honor the remarkable contributions of Hispanic Americans to the U.S. Military. From the American Revolution to today, Latinos have demonstrated extraordinary bravery, often making the ultimate sacrifice. 💡 Did you know? - 20,000 Latinos served in Operation Desert Shield/Storm (1990-1991). - 80,000 fought in the Vietnam War (1959-1973). - 500,000 stood strong in World War II (1939-1945). - 200,000 bravely served in World War I (1914-1918). Additionally, according to the Congressional Research Service in 2017, Latinos accounted for 10.6% of casualties in Iraq and 7.9% in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Let’s remember and honor these Hispanic heroes who have served and sacrificed for our nation. 🇺🇸 #HispanicHeroes #MilitaryHistory #DiversityInTheMilitary

As we enter the winter season in New England, the days start to leave their mark with the bitter cold. Fortunately, the darker days are made brighter with the plentiful holiday lights used in displays all around us. I also welcome the many stories shared of people’s generosity and gift-giving that come around this time. The greatest gift, of service and sacrifice, was given by so many during World War II. One soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life while working to save the world, was finally brought home recently. We remember all who served, volunteered, and died in war, conflict, and peacekeeping. We thank them for their service and reflect on their sacrifice. This Anzac Day, we highlight the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Thank you to the Deadly Story website for the below excerpts: “Our mob fought in large numbers during the World Wars, despite the fact that they were legally barred from serving. “A strong motivator for many was the promise of fair treatment and equality whilst in the armed forces." Racism still existed in the armed forces. But many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander soldiers have said they were treated better. In World War II, many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service people were also promised full citizenship rights on their return. When they returned, they "found the same and in some cases worse discrimination, colonisation and injustice as when they’d left". Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service people were not respected as veterans. They did not have their contributions recognised. "Recently, through the tireless work of families of service people and others, there has been more recognition of the contributions and bravery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the military." Adelaide unveiled the first memorial for Aboriginal soldiers in 2013. There are also memorials in Warrnambool and Mildura. What is about having power over someone else that is so compelling? In this week's episode Ali Baird and I are talking with Tony Wright from Forward Assist. We are talking about Moral Injury and Military Sexual Trauma and how it isn't recognised by HM Forces and the Ministry of Defence. MST can and is used as a tool of power and coercion over more vulnerable members of the armed forces and beyond. It is an intergenerational trauma as suffers don't want to disclose to their spouse/partner and child due to shame, guilt and humiliation. Something needs to be done. the female veteran community is leading the way by highlighting what they went through. The men who suffered through this are keeping quiet possibly due to the reasons listed above. The MST and Moral Injury also ripple through the veteran LGBT+ community as well and that is a subject we want to have a deeper exploration on. A few reasons why this subject is so taboo: Reputation of institutions The reputation of people in these institutions. Being a bystander and letting it happen. HISTORY TALKFIGHTING FOR FREEDOM: NISEI SOLDIERS IN WORLD WAR II National Museum of the United States Army 1775 Liberty Drive Fort Belvoir VA, 22060 Wednesday, July 24, 2024 @ 12:00 pm ET ELC, Virtual (Zoom) “Learn about the courageous men and women of Japanese ancestry from Hawaii and the mainland United States who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, while some of their families were placed in War Relocation Authority Confinement Sites. Second-generation Japanese Americans, known as Nisei, demanded the right to join the Armed Forces during World War II. On Feb. 9, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt ordered the relocation of Japanese Americans living on the West Coast. 122,000 men, women, and children were sent to incarceration camps throughout the United States. Further, the government classified males of Japanese ancestry as enemy aliens. This classification disqualified them from military service. The Army later loosened this restriction in June 1942. Despite the odds, thousands of Nisei Soldiers bravely served in World War II. Explore the commitment, challenges, and sacrifices of the Nisei Soldiers. Participants will examine Executive Order 9906, its impact on Japanese Americans living on the West Coast, and how military service was used as a strategy to advance civil rights.” https://lnkd.in/gr8z_RkV

That's incredible! What type of archaeological excavation missions did they work on?
