Today we released a new policy paper on why USEPA Bruno Pigott should ban scrubber discharge. 🚢 🚫 Why? Because scrubbers don’t scrub – that’s a misnomer. They take pollution from the air and dump it into our oceans. 🌊 Scrubber discharge is toxic to marine life, even at very low concentrations and could have serious impact on the populations of key species of marine food webs as well as threatened and endangered species. 🐳 Why hasn’t USEPA acted on it? EPA proposed a rulemaking four years ago but didn’t act citing “insufficient data.” That’s why today, we rounded up 26 scientific papers to show the EPA that new science is available and scrubber discharge should be banned. ⛔ 🚫 Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC) Read here: https://bit.ly/3yPazR6

Privately protected areas (PPAs) will play an important role in helping many countries contribute to the global target of 30% protection by 2030 (#30x30). But there is still much to learn about PPAs. A new paper I've published with Brent Mitchell explores research priorities for PPAs https://lnkd.in/gU6wfukN, as identified by researchers and practitioners themselves, and as part of a survey undertaken by the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Specialist Group on PPAs and Nature Stewardship. The article is part of a special issue of Frontiers in Conservation Science documenting advances in PPAs: https://lnkd.in/gRuKQZ22

🦋 The State of the UK's Butterflies: Are Conservation Efforts To Save Our Butterflies Working? entoLIVE blog | Dr Richard (Rik) Fox | 🗣️ Dr Richard Fox from Butterfly Conservation presents the state of the UK’s butterfly populations. The UK's butterflies are in trouble with half of them listed as threatened or near threatened and 80% having decreased in abundance, distribution or both since the 1970s. This talk will present the latest assessment of the UK's butterflies, drawing on decades of data from citizen science recording and monitoring. Despite the gloomy overall picture painted by the long-term trends, numerous examples show that, given sufficient resources, conservation action can turn around the fortunes of threatened butterflies. https://lnkd.in/e72axE8w

Environmental Communication (Journal) at International Environmental Communication Association (IECA)
What’s an article that has changed the way you think about "the environment” or “environmentalism”? Since the inaugural issue in 2007, the journal of Environmental Communication continues to be a site of ongoing conversation and revision of foundational terms, such as: environment, communication, nature, culture, risk, ecology, crisis, and care. https://lnkd.in/gi8bUwuj

It can be challenging to remain positive about our sustainable future when there are so many environmental problems to solve. But there are many people at The University of Georgia who are working hard to tackle environmental challenges. If you find yourself addicted to environmental doomscrolling, check out the link below to find out how students and faculty in the Odum School of Ecology are helping to solve some of our most pressing environmental problems. https://lnkd.in/ex3hvB6G

Wondering how Marine Artificial Structures, like oil and gas platforms and offshore wind farms, affect the environment? Do they enhance biodiversity or take away from it? How do they affect fisheries? Are there opportunities for Net Gain in their management? How should we best monitor them? The INSITE NORTH SEA programme has put together six policy briefs that grapple with some of these questions, ranging across topics like Marine Monitoring, Fisheries, Offshore Wind, Cumulative Effects, Environmental Restoration and Net Gain, and Marine Biodiversity. For these insights follow this link: https://lnkd.in/e-SX4E-T

Researchers question the methods of Näringslivets Medieinstitut. In an article published in the magazine Journalisten, researchers Kristoffer Ekberg (Senior Lecturer in Human Ecology at our department) and Kjell Vowles (University of Gothenburg), write that Näringslivets Medieinstitut (NMI) minimizes the importance of the climate threats we face, through their reviews of climate and energy reporting in Swedish media. The researchers have investigated how disinformation about the climate issue is spread and how climate policy is counteracted in this way, and they point out the NMI's reviews as a major part of this advocacy work. In the article, the researchers present eleven points (with source references) that question the NMI's methods. Postdoctoral researcher | TESAF | Università degli Studi di Padova | LIFE ENABLE project | Network Governance| Natura 2000 governance| Social-Ecological Relationships
Another result from my PhD focused on interactions between society and nature through LIFE projects! 👥 🌿 In this article, we proposed a new methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of collaborative environmental governance towards biodiversity conservation and restoration through a probabilistic network analysis of social-ecological relationships. 🤝 From a comprehensive analysis of network structures, we derive practical recommendations. These insights can empower policymakers and practitioners to optimize the composition of project partnerships and to identify the most suitable objectives and intervention areas, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of collaborative environmental governance. 😎 This is the link for the full article: https://lnkd.in/dDaPHC-k

2moWell done PE, for this excellent overview. You would say: how much more do authorities need to know before they finally decide to stop this massive pollution in coastal waters
