Every May, we celebrate Older Americans Month (OAM), led by the Administration for Community Living. It's a time to honor the invaluable contributions of older Americans, explore aging trends, and reinforce our dedication to supporting the seniors in our communities. Today is DAY 6 of #31in31 for Domestic Violence Awareness Month Did you know that, from May 2006 when I founded Impact for Women till now in May 2024, Impact has positively impacted the lives of almost 60,000 (!!!) Victorian women who have escaped extreme violence at home? On top of that, we’ve provided thousands of Christmas gifts for their children, given bursaries and interest-free loans, paid for refuge repairs, offered a free wellness program and a free childcare service in court amongst other things. Having stood back as President just recently after 18 years, and therefore taken some time to reflect on Impact’s achievements in that time, I am incredibly proud of what we, as volunteers, have done and continue to do. But there is still so much more to be done. The numbers are NOT going down. As a so-called first-world country, we should be very, very ashamed of that fact. The federal Child Care Development Fund (CCDF), while being the primary public source aimed at facilitating child care access, serves only 1 in 7 eligible children across the country. The threshold for eligibility remains alarmingly low, with 13 states setting a bar where a family of three earning over $33,000 annually falls through the support net. This discrepancy highlights a significant gap in our system, where countless families find themselves in a precarious position, unable to access the child care support they desperately need. As we continue to navigate these challenges, the role of community and philanthropy becomes ever more crucial.
