This AM on FOX29 News I discussed Racial disparity in births: Black women in NJ 25% more likely to get unplanned C-section. Why? Bias in care, increased revenue for the hospital. This was found in over ONE MILLION births in NJ but there are similar trends across the nation. Moms to be and Families: 1. Don’t got to appointments alone. Be vocal with your expectations & concerns. 2. Have a birth plan. Understand the difference between a natural delivery and a C-Section (an operation that can lead to medical complications later). 3. Seek care if your body doesn’t feel right and don’t leave until you are seen. 4. Choose your health system wisely, find a health team that treats you Like Their Own. As I approach my son's first birthday and think back to where I was a year ago, this research really hits home. I recognize my extreme privilege knowing that my biggest worries for delivery were whether or not the phone charger I brought was going to be long enough to reach my bed at the hospital or that my parents weren't going to spoil our three year old too much while we were gone a few nights for the delivery. Never once did I seriously consider a severe adverse outcome. Millions of women are not so lucky. New research from my team at NORC at the University of Chicago highlights the need to address unequal maternal and postpartum outcomes. American mothers experience severe complications at a high rate; among them, Black mothers experience much higher rates of these near-death events than others, during childbirth and after. As research professionals, we have a responsibility to utilize available data to identify root causes of complications during and following birth. Within this, calling out inequities is only the first step – we must continue to probe to find addressable clinical and social drivers of these outcomes. Take a look at our new research. Thank you to @BCBS for funding this important work. #HealthEquity #MaternalHealth #PostpartumCare #HealthDisparities #NORC #EquityInAction #HealthcareInnovation #SocialDeterminantsOfHealth #HealthCareStrategy

This #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, we recognize and celebrate health centers’ role in advancing healthier outcomes for Black mothers and birthing individuals, especially through essential prenatal care. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS, 78% of Massachusetts health center patients receive early prenatal care, even higher than the national average of 72%. As Black birthing individuals face deeply disparate pregnancy-related health outcomes as a result of systemic racism and deep-rooted inequities, responsive and community-centered care programs are key to closing these racial and ethnic gaps.
