The year 2023 saw the inauguration of 37 new hydrogen stations in Europe, 12 in Japan, 29 in South Korea, and 7 in North America. Remarkably, 92% of the new hydrogen refueling stations in Europe can accommodate trucks. These figures are from the 16th annual review by H2stations.org, a service of Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik (LBST). Globally, 40 countries now have hydrogen refueling infrastructure that is either operational or under construction, totaling 921 active hydrogen stations. Carl von Linde (1842-1934) was a German engineer, inventor and the founder of Linde plc, the world’s largest industrial gas company. In the 1870s he invented the refrigeration cycle, leading to fridges, air separation – and hydrogen liquefaction. Fast forward to 2024, the world’s largest truck manufacturer, Daimler AG (“mother” of Mercedes-Benz trucks, Freightliner, Mitsubishi Fuso and others) is convinced that liquid hydrogen is the ideal fuel for long-haul trucking. A range of 1,000+ kilometers has been demonstrated in 2023, and according to their team, the refueling technology is very reliable and efficient. However, the critical point is hydrogen liquefaction. While the US still have a significant number of liquefiers developed and built in the 1960s and 70s for NASA projects, Europe, Asia, Africa Latin America and Australia only have a few of them. So deploying a large number of liquefiers would be necessary. Is that possible? How efficient are they today? How efficient will they be in 10 years from now? How do they work? What different option do we have? Is the liquid hydrogen supply chain ready for scale up? These – and many other – questions will be answered in our next webinar. Gassco AS and GASCADE Gastransport GmbH to cooperate on plans for hydrogen transport in the North Sea According to a press release Gassco AS (Gassco) and GASCADE Gastransport GmbH (GASCADE) signed a memorandum of understanding with the aim to transport hydrogen via pipeline in the North Sea. The cooperation between the two network operators is embedded in a strategic partnership to find infrastructure solutions between Norway and Germany. Results for the first european hydrogen auction are out! What a difficult game is to help a nascent industry. If regulators set commitments very hight since the begginig you may delay the industry, but if you leave the auction design very open you end up playing the options game and risk setting price references that may prove too agressive in the future. In any case, after the dissapoing data participation in the hydrogen auction of the UK, it is positive to see such an industry apettite, which hopefully will trigger companies taking FIDs of projects.
