The #FTC could give lessons in modern boundary setting. Here, again, from on high the FTC has reminded companies where the boundary lies. So many companies are (naturally) eager to leverage previously collected personal information for AI uses. But however tantalizing those caldrons of existing personal information are, the FTC warns against enacting surreptitious retroactive changes to privacy policies to broaden usage rights. While our online universe has wildly changed over the last 20 years (not to mention the privacy landscape), this boundary has remained as it was when the FTC squarely addressed it back in 2004.
Per the #ftc : "It may be unfair or deceptive for a company to adopt more permissive data practices—for example, to start sharing consumers’ data with third parties or using that data for AI training—and to only inform consumers of this change through a surreptitious, retroactive amendment to its terms of service or privacy policy." https://lnkd.in/gMdDGPwu

The FTC has made it clear: a commitment is a commitment! AI-focused companies (and others) can face FTC charges if they ~quietly~ change the user privacy policy to allow for abundant user data flow to train their AI products. Not notifying users of these newly permissive data practices constitutes unfair and deceptive practices.
