As a seasoned journaler, I was initially intrigued by Apple's "Journal" feature. My excitement began to wane as I became aware of the extensive intimate data collection involved and its potential implications for data privacy. For highly regulated data, corporations should consider a strategic approach to govern their data properly, thereby mitigating risks. This is especially important in light of Meta's recent $1.4 billion settlement, underscoring the need for robust data governance to incorporate privacy, information security, etc.
Earlier this week, Meta reached a record-breaking settlement with the Texas Attorney General’s Office for alleged misuse of facial recognition technology. Read Mitchell Martin and Jeremy Rucker's latest blog post to learn the wider implications this decision has for data privacy regulation in Texas. https://lnkd.in/gm5kcPqK

AI's widespread adoption is fueled by human indifference toward digital privacy. While we prioritize physical privacy, many are unaware of or disregard digital privacy online. Just as a car's hardware and driver need fuel, AI relies on data—your data.

Privacy as a differentiator. Privacy was (again) the core message in the launch of Apple Intelligence. Local processing and your own private cloud are such strong signals. iPhone users get it. My data is mine. Open AI (and Google) got the message too. Yes to your LLM, no to my clients data. Elon couldn’t resist himself to publicly react. Allow me to zoom out for a sec. The best part of it all is that privacy sells. Which means that privacy matters. There still are many zombies in the room, but the age of surveillance is long gone. A new age of data empowerment and ownership is here. Privacy is not solely owned by the DPO and the legal department. It goes beyond compliance. Privacy is part of the the growth strategy. Retailers are embracing privacy to differentiate from Amazon and Google, and playing numb as another store/marketplace out there. Privacy is the perfect narrative to elevate and allow me, redefine trust and customer relationships in the age of AI. Thanks Lourdes M. Turrecha for your inspirational piece of the 5 carrots. Can’t believe it’s a 2020 piece, it soooo today. Link in comments.

Not all aboard the Apple AI intelligence train! The feature will not launch in EU and China due to complex legal requirements - AI model approval, data localisation, and ChatGPT ban, user privacy - to name a few. Begs the question, is ROW ready? #ai #appleintelligence #eU #china #privacy
“Apple recently announced a bunch of interesting AI-powered features at the WWDC 2024 that were set to be the company’s answer to its rivals. As unfortunate as it is, however, the very heart of these features, the much-coveted Apple Intelligence (AI), won’t be launching in the EU anytime soon. […] Given how strict EU rules are, launching a new product in the bloc has always been a challenge. However, this time, it’s not the bloc that has banned these features but Apple itself—the Big Tech company has decided to hold off on launching the above-mentioned features. […] In addition to the EU, Apple has also slammed on the brakes on launching Apple Intelligence ‘AI’ in China. The first challenge is that China is just as strict as the EU when it comes to technology. So, Apple will have to get its AI model approved by the Chinese authorities.” #Privacy #GDPR #dataprotection #AppleIntelligence Subscribe to EDPO's newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dwK8sde *This article was not written by EDPO. Alastair Paterson digs into Apple Intelligence and what that means for data privacy in the enterprise. "Musk’s outburst at the news of Apple partnering with OpenAI may be an overreaction, but it’s symptomatic of some recent high-profile gaffes around AI and data privacy. In recent months, there’s already been public outcry about data privacy issues surrounding Microsoft Recall, Slack, and DocuSign. Thus far, Apple has fallen short of providing clear guidance on what data will ultimately be sent to OpenAI and how privacy will be protected. This should give individuals and corporations pause." https://lnkd.in/gHeMSUV9 #appleintelligence #dataprivacy

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, agrees to a historic $1.4 billion settlement with Texas, addressing the unauthorized use of facial recognition technology. This case underscores the growing importance of regulatory compliance in data privacy, particularly concerning biometric data. The settlement, while not admitting wrongdoing, signifies a critical shift in how tech companies manage user data. What does this mean for the future of tech and privacy laws?
