Remarkable impact can come from unremarkable actions. And an action becomes unremarkable when it's simply a part of who you are. When we simply pause and listen to understand what's truly happening in a difficult situation, we are then usually faced with a personal choice of how to respond. I'll challenge you to consider the impact that your choice has on others. If you have the ability to redirect a bad situation or to positively influence the outcome, however big or small, then make the right choice.

Life is hard. Talking to your kids about cancer doesn’t have to be. We should be open, honest and transparent to mitigate uncertainty, which breeds fear. Keep in mind that these conversations will likely unfold over a period of time… kids, and adults, need time to process, digest, and ask questions. Kids deserve more credit than we give them for absorbing and being attune to their surroundings. I spoke with Angeline McCall at KUSA-TV, 9NEWS about how to approach these moments with intention. An insightful and fun post on how to talk to someone with cancer. These points stood out to me: - Stay open to someone's story - Be curious about it, rather than offer a platitude. - Offering specific help - Just be present (and normal) rather than making them assign you a task. It is worth mentioning that if you are supporting or know someone who is going through cancer then this will impact you too and those feelings need to be taken care of. In the OET, some role plays are between a relative or carer and the healthcare professional. This highlights the importance of 'next of kin' relationships. In contrast, there is no roleplay about talking with friends of a sick person. This absence is for good reasons, namely confidentiality and privacy. Of course, people can nominate medical power of attorney (POA) to friends and loved ones so they can be part of these conversations, but this is not really a common practice. Author and podcaster, Dan Savage, notes that there are two kinds of closeness: 'the biological family and the logical family'. I agree with Dan especially after the experience of losing a close friend to cancer while I lived in Japan. We need to find healthy ways to help living with cancer and other illnesses. Surviving cancer can be tough but having conversations about it need not be. Some really good ideas here to shift and reframe questions to support those going through treatment. It has helpful conversations about what you can say to have empathy and connection to those with a cancer diagnosis. The last slide also contains the very important reminder to get your screenings as early detection can be a lifesaver. I'm 5 years out as a breast cancer survivor so I know whereof I speak. All of this is #goodadvice - and I am happy to share it far and wide.

This is an important one to read! Many of us fear saying the wrong thing to someone fighting the dreaded big C - Cancer.
