With graduation season in full swing, LinkedIn has just released the top industries Gen Z in Britain should be eyeing up if they want to beat their classmates to a job this summer—and apparently, they needn’t look far from home. That’s because, according to the networking platform’s analysis of millions of member profiles and job postings, the fastest-growing industry in the U.K. right now is the education sector. Why? Because the chance to take weeks off for summer holidays and half-terms while still having a steady career isn’t going amiss among graduates. We’ve all seen it—whether firsthand, through friends, or relatives: recent graduates are struggling to find jobs despite their degrees. Picture this: you spend $200K+ on tuition, graduate into a job market where entry-level positions require 3-5 years of experience, and find yourself stuck in unemployment. This is the reality for many recent graduates. So, Forbes recently met with our CEO and co-founder, Matt Wilkerson, to discuss this issue. "Nearly 60% of parents are financially supporting their adult kids aged 18 to 34, and 57% of young adults are living with their parents. The economic challenges are clear. The white-collar job market is extremely competitive, as more Americans attain college degrees. Employers are requiring unrealistic professional experience for entry-level positions, making it difficult for recent graduates to compete." With so many young people affected by the job crisis, it’s time for a change. 📅 Stay tuned this week as we break down the problems with the current job market and discuss the one thing that can change it. But first, we want to hear from you: What challenges have you or someone you know faced in the job market after graduation? Share your experiences in the comments below! It's unfortunate but not entirely surprising to hear that new graduates are facing increased challenges in finding employment since the onset of COVID-19. The pandemic has had a profound impact on the job market, disrupting industries and altering hiring practices. Factors like remote work, economic uncertainty, and shifts in consumer behavior have all contributed to this challenging landscape for recent graduates. The widening gap between new graduates and other job seekers underscores the unique difficulties this demographic faces. With less work experience and often a lack of established professional networks, new graduates may find themselves at a disadvantage compared to more experienced candidates. Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach, including support from educational institutions, government initiatives, and efforts within the private sector to create opportunities tailored to the needs of recent graduates. It's crucial to provide resources for skill development, mentorship programs, and access to job opportunities to help bridge this gap and support the transition from education to employment. https://lnkd.in/ewJQyMXx

Students and graduates, this is for you. Today, on campus, it was heartbreaking to speak with so many final-year students still without anything secured for next year. They weren't expecting job offers yet, but were overwhelmed by the lack of responses to the many applications they'd sent out. Here’s my advice: Companies often say they're recruiting between March and July, but rarely fill all their grad spots right away. Even if they don’t advertise that they’re still looking, they often are. I’ve had years where I was still searching for grads just days before the programme started. The talent struggle is real! So, don’t be discouraged if a closing date has passed. Find the grad recruiter’s name and inbox them if you have to. Use LinkedIn to find hiring managers in the divisions you want to work in, and reach out! There have been many times I’ve accepted last-minute applications to fill roles I couldn’t fill earlier. Be hungry. Be successful. Good luck! #graduaterecruitment #toptalent #investmentbanking #proactive #reachout #makeithappen South African Graduate Employers Association (SAGEA) StudyTrust

Not remotely surprised by this. As I've mentioned here before, I just finished teaching a group of 14 college interns this semester, as I have done for decades. By and large, few of them had any real professional job experience. #Graduates will be caught flat footed as they get ready to launch after graduation because they are products of a #liberalarts education, which by design does not prepare anyone for an actual "career." I love doing #careercoaching for this very reason. My simple advice to graduates is and always has been to seek out job experience *before* you graduate! https://lnkd.in/gngFqEqx. #newgrads #classof2024 #jobmarket

Really good article from Peter Coy. While the stats about un/underemployment are very scary, that is not proof that "There aren’t enough college-level jobs out there for all of you." While "52% of college grads are underemployed," there are in fact plenty of jobs evidenced by the number of companies with open roles that would be perfect. The real issue is not a supply of jobs or demand by candidates (or even a "skills gap"), but rather a matching problem. Specifically, many college students and recent grads aren't able to do the level of career exploration to help them understand what is the right role or demonstrate their skills. In addition, most employers limit their candidate pool based upon academic pedigree (ie school, major, GPA) and don't effectively build their employer brand on campus. In fact, looking at the 55% first year attrition rather provides more evidence of this issue. This is why I am such a big believer in #MicroInternships. These short-term, professional projects provide the opportunity for students and employers to "date" so they can be better prepared and make more informed decisions.
