Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, and as partners of MATES in Construction NZ, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the impact of suicide and the importance of checking in on our mates. Through our partnership with MATES in Construction NZ, we're working to educate and support our teams on recognising signs of distress and the importance of reaching out to those around us. Suicide affects everyone. In the construction industry, we lose nearly one person every week to suicide. Construction workers are also six times more likely to die by suicide than from workplace accidents. Together, we can make a difference.
WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY | 10 SEPTEMBER “Working with MATES has transformed my life. I’ve had the privilege of training over 8,000 construction workers in suicide awareness, sharing my story with the aim of helping others understand that they’re never alone. That our scars aren’t marks of defeat, but symbols of survival. Each one tells a story of battles fought and won, even when it didn’t feel like winning at the time.” Today we thank Field Officer James Sendall for his generosity of spirit in sharing his story on World Suicide Prevention Day. #suicideprevention #strongertogether #wspd #mateshelpingmates

🎗 September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day, a day when communities and organisations worldwide come together to raise awareness about suicide prevention. This year, Samaritans are highlighting the importance of the language we use when talking about this important topic, especially when we're concerned about someone. Starting a conversation about suicide can be difficult, but it can make a significant difference. If you're worried about someone, it's important to check in with them. Begin by asking if they're okay, and if you sense they need more support, gently ask again. You might say something like, "I’ve noticed you’ve been struggling lately, is everything okay?” People who have experienced suicidal thoughts often say it’s a relief to talk about them. By simply being there, listening, and showing that you care, you can provide much-needed support. If the person prefers to talk to someone else or needs additional help, Samaritans are available 24/7, every day of the year. Suicide. It’s one of those really uncomfortable words that evokes all sorts of emotions. And a word that we perhaps think that, by not saying it and not talking about it, it might leave us alone and not affect us. But only by talking about it can we reduce the stigma. And hopefully prevent people dying by suicide. This World Suicide Prevention Day, take the opportunity to talk about suicide with friends and family, challenge yours and other’s thoughts on suicide, and make it that little bit easier for someone you know to say to you “I’m struggling”. And know that, as well as family, friends and colleagues, there are some fantastic organisations that can help you if you are struggling. Samaritans Mind Campaign Against Living Miserably

Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day, I thought I would share about an American Legion program called "Be The One". As with other services that aim to prevent suicide, there is a focus on destigmatizing asking about mental health. The goal is to educate members throughout the American Legion family on how they can provide peer to peer support and resources to veterans in need within their local community. Thus, enabling them to “be the one to save one life”. Stats are from the resource page I will put in the comments -The No. 1 issue facing the veteran community is suicide. -It is estimated that between 17 and 22 veterans or service members take their lives each day. -The rate of suicide for veterans is more than 50% higher than that of non-veteran adults. If you are a veteran in crisis, resources are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week: Call 988 and press 1 Text 838255 Visit www.veterancrisisline.net #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #BeTheOne
