A change in thinking needed? Time for a shift in transport priorities? Are we so heavily in the grip of the sunk-cost fallacy that we're unable to see need for change, for a new way? #futuremobility #transport #mobilitysolutions #publictransport #investment #funding #ownership #societalimpact #economicimpact #environmentalimpact #builtenvironment #transformation #mindsetshift #socialmobility #competitiveadvantage #globalmarkets #attractiveness
Another reminder of how expensive new roads are. The £1bn being used for this one 10 mile stretch of new dual carriageway is ten times the amount of dedicated active travel funding available in 2023-24 for the whole of England, and a third of all the spending on active travel between 2021-25 (based on NAO's recent report: https://lnkd.in/eb3eh8ed). I've not read the detail on this particular scheme but the statement that this "funding will back drivers by reducing congestion by up to an hour and a half every week" should always ring alarm bells, as it has repeatedly been shown to be false. The short term benefits drivers might feel from increases in road capacity are eventually eroded by the demand that new roads inevitably create. #transport #roadbuilding #activetravel

Exciting news for our region as the Biden Administration recently announced their commitment to a $6.1 billion funding boost for high-speed rail in the Cascadia Corridor. As Surrey's Economic Development Team, we've been advocating for sustainable transportation solutions, and this announcement aligns perfectly with our vision for a connected and thriving West Coast. Did you know that in the proposed plans for the route, Surrey was the ideal location for the northern terminus in two out of the three scenarios? It makes sense when you consider that Surrey is the geographic center of our region and has the most opportunity for growth. Our transportation infrastructure is only improving with the SkyTrain extension and announcement of the new Bus Rapid Transit lanes - it’s clear that Surrey is the right hub to connect our region to the rest of Cascadia. Learn more about the announcement in the BIV News article: https://lnkd.in/gBr-9vix #cityofsurrey #investsurrey #highspeedrail #cascadiacorridor #sustainabletransportation

𝐁𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐀𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 $𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐔.𝐒. 𝐅𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has announced nearly $300 million in grants to expand and modernize ferry systems across the United States. The funding, part of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to improve transportation options for millions of Americans who rely on ferries for their daily commutes and travel needs. “These funds will make it easier for Americans to move about their day while also protecting the rivers and waterways they depend on economically,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The grants will support 18 projects across 14 states, focusing on replacing aging vessels with electric ships, expanding fleets, and constructing new terminals and docks. Notably, eight of these projects will receive federal support for environmentally friendly propulsion technologies. FTA Acting Administrator Veronica Vanterpool praised the initiative, saying, “This historic funding for FTA’s Ferry Programs will enhance ways for people to travel by water. We applaud ferry agencies for taking the big step toward electrification, increasing reliability, and bringing their aging ferry systems into a state of good repair.” The funding is distributed across three competitive grant programs: the Ferry Service for Rural Communities Program ($194 million), the Passenger Ferry Grant Program ($56.3 million), and the Electric or Low Emitting Ferry Program ($49 million). These programs aim to boost ferry service in rural areas, modernize urban ferry systems, and promote the adoption of low- and zero-emission technology. The FTA highlighted three notable project grant awards, including a $106.4 million grant to the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities for a new diesel-electric ferry to serve rural southwest Alaska, replacing a 60-year-old vessel. In San Francisco, $11.5 million will go towards building two new electric ferries to enhance emission-free service between downtown, Treasure Island, and Mission Bay. Additionally, the Maine Department of Transportation will receive $16.6 million to modernize rural ferry terminals in Lincolnville and Islesboro, supporting the future operation of a new hybrid ferry. #maritime #maritimesafety #marine #marinesafetynews #marineindustry #latestmaritimenews #bulkcarrier #cargobulkcarrier #holdcleaning #Biden #Sanfrancisco #FTA #unitedstates

It’s easy to see how cities benefit from passenger rail, but how do rural communities benefit? Turns out, there are many ways: - Economic growth: passenger rail brings visitors, supports local businesses, and can revitalize communities. - Better mobility: passenger rail connects you to essential services without a long drive. - Preservation: unique landscapes and natural beauty can be enjoyed while staying preserved. At RailNation: Tucson, we’ll discuss passenger rail’s benefits for Arizona and the entire country. We’ll also bring together advocates and build the platform to advance passenger rail. The MOVE layer of the Future Geelong Map demonstrates current and future ways in which transport will be integrated and connected through the region. Future Geelong's historic and geographic strengths as a significant port city in Victoria will be leveraged. Avalon Airport and the Port of Geelong perform an enhanced transport and logistics role, and are Geelong’s domestic and international gateways. Existing collector rail infrastructure along the Geelong line between Lara and Winchelsea Railway Stations will be leveraged. The rail infrastructure between Bannockburn and Geelong will be revived for passenger services to support substantial population growth anticipated for the Western Geelong Growth Area and Bannockburn. Geelong's existing suburban bus network will be overhauled to provide fine grain connectivity between and around Central Geelong, the 'transit villages' and other suburban and township parts of the region. Existing efforts to deliver continuous and connected active transport infrastructure will be consolidated. These public and active transport interventions will significantly reduce the extent of 'last mile' journeys and short trips being taken in private vehicles. Director Spatial Analytics and Policy @ Mecone | PlanTech, Policy, Spatial Analytics, Senior Executive
Couldn't agree more, the need for High Speed rail (at least Faster Rail). For too long we have kicked this can down the road for a future government to solve. And the result of inaction has been living with 19th century transport commute times, in the 21st century. Did you know the current rail trip between Gosford and Sydney is at a paltry average of ~58km/h, in carriages built over 30 years ago. This type of service will always incentivise car travel.... or no travel. Yes, there are engineering and topography challenges. Yes there are financing and budget constraints. All good arguments for careful and innovative planning. But they are not good arguments for not doing anything. Not in today's world with today's technologies and PPP financing structures, among the many other innovative techniques being used throughout the world for faster rail travel. Providing the future generation (our children and children yet to be born), an opportunity to access the economic and service powerhouses that stem from capital cities, to and from regional areas, will be one of the defining make or break actions that support our urban growth and expansion in sustainable ways. Over to you Federal Government. https://lnkd.in/dPt7CcPf
