You're not going to want to miss our September Career Fair at Vancouver Island University! Employers and recruiters - we have just opened up employer table registration for our next large-scale Vancouver Island University Career Fair, taking place on September 13, 2024! This event takes place at the start of the new school year, when many students will be looking for employment, career, internship, and volunteer opportunities. This will be a great opportunity to promote any employment or internship opportunities with your organization to new students or soon to be graduating students looking for their career post academia. Our previous career fair in September 2023 was a great success, drawing in over 650 VIU students and alumni from various programs during a 4-hour period. This event provided an excellent platform for over 60 different employers to connect with a diverse and talented pool of candidates. The fair not only offered meaningful networking opportunities but also received an employer satisfaction rating of 87%. In a post-event survey, 31 respondents (half of the employers that were in attendance) anticipated to hire 40-68+ students as a result of this event. To ensure that our department is able to continue organizing events of this magnitude, and to be able to continue providing the best level of career services that we can to VIU students and our employer partners, we will be charging $100+fees/table for this upcoming career fair. In addition to being open to VIU students and alumni from all programs, members of the general public will have access to attend, to ensure that our employer partners have the opportunity to connect with as many potential candidates as possible, and that your organizations are more than satisfied with the success of this event. We only have 75 employer tables available for this 3-hour event, and I am anticipating these spots to fill-up quickly (we have already thirteen tables sell since email invites were sent), so please let me know if your organization is interested in participating and I will send you an Eventbrite link! In recognition of National 2nd Chance Month, Westwood Church will be hosting a 2nd Chance Job Fair and Employment Readiness Event. We are looking for more businesses to join us. There are many reasons why companies should hire those who are formally incarcerated. These include: Employee retention: Having a criminal background makes an employee less likely to leave a job voluntarily, likely to have a higher tenure, and no more likely to be terminated. Recidivism reduction: People with criminal backgrounds with employment only have a 16% recidivism rate after three years, compared to 52% of those unemployed. Stimulates the economy: Employing just 100 people with criminal backgrounds would increase their income tax contributions by $1.9 million and boost sales tax revenues by $770,000. It would also save the government millions in criminal justice fees. Encourages self-improvement: Employing people with criminal backgrounds gives them a drive and purpose, which creates a positive change not only in their lives but also in the broader society. Latin School of Chicago hosted a Diversity Job Fair in their building and invited 20 NAIS independent schools to recruit prospective employees. Buckets Over Bullying thinks it’s imperative to remind prospective NAIS employees that if they are choosing a career in the private school industry it is critical to be a person of the highest moral standards, integrity and have the genuine intent to protect all students. If student safety and well being is not your number one priority, then you should not be looking for a job in the NAIS private school industry. Sadly, the @naisnetwork does not tout integrity, honesty and a moral compass. Why? Because they definitely do not uphold these characteristics. In my opinion , the NAIS has a very deliberate and devious agenda that causes harm to many students and families and the @naisnetwork does not care. And, let me be clear, The Latin School of Chicago does not care about student safety. They don’t follow their own school policies. Their handbook claims it has “a zero tolerance policy for all forms of bullying” if that is the case, then why is my son Nate Bronstein dead? It is all about their image, and the money. May 1 is National Skilled Trades Day! According to Forbes, over 53% of workers employed in a skilled trade are nearing retirement age. Compare that to the fact that only one in five students graduating from high school have shown an interest in trade jobs, and you can see why employers are having trouble finding workers. National Skilled Trades Day aims to raise awareness about the benefits of skilled trades jobs in the United States. A couple of firsts for me today: First time posting on LinkedIn and first time attending a Career Transition Partnership employment fair. Reflecting on the experience, I realized I hadn't prepared for the event nor set clear goals. The overwhelming realization hit me – if I don't sell myself better, my transition to Civvy street may be a failure. Tonight, I'm gearing up for success with 7 months to go before I become a Civilian. It's always interesting to speak to the next generation and engage them in a discussion about the wonderful world of Construction! While my main goal at these events is to hopefully find someone to join our team, I do my best to talk about the construction industry as a whole, highlighting the diversity within, the different trades and the variety of opportunities available. At this particular event, parents were guiding their kids through the area, some walking past construction related stations, and commenting "that's construction, keep walking". When I volunteered at another event with even younger minds, it was somewhat unnerving to hear the majority of children proclaiming they want to be YouTube influencers when they grow up. Talking to these middle school and high school students, they are constantly told that in order to have a good job with actual living wages, you need to go to a good college. If you do that, sure you will have student debt, but you will also have a good salary. These students have acquired a narrow view and perhaps some misconceptions about Construction. Now, I am in now way saying that college isn't good or in some cases necessary, especially as the majority of companies require a 4 year degree. What I am saying is that not everyone is ready for college, or want to go to college for whatever reason. So my thought would be, instead of pushing kids to go to college, teach them that there are other options, there are trade schools and other opportunities too. There are so many programs that high-schoolers can become educated in a trade during their HS career, earning credits and if desired, can graduate with a degree as well as a license and maybe even a job offer. Working in construction as a GC, we have a unique view of the different industries. Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC, Misc Metals and my favorite... Masonry -- all have need. These are not dying industries, these are industries that are alive and well and will forever be, but don't garner the interest of the young. And for those who know, being in the C-suite isn't the only career where you can make a 6-figure salary and have a vacation home. (--That's not me... I'm just saying) All that said, Construction is so much more than wearing boots, a safety vest and a hardhat. It takes management, accountants, human resources, public relations, IT, and a myriad of others. It takes the whole team with knowledge of the industry to run efficiently. Lets encourage the Youts (said in Joe Pesci's thick Jersey accent) the benefits and diversity of our industry!

I've been getting a lot of questions about the event we're putting on, so I wanted to answer some of the most common ones: ✨ Is this a job fair? Technically, no. This event is a conversational roundtable featuring young people and professionals alongside employers and leaders. It's a chance to share perspectives about each other and discuss how we can overcome generational obstacles as a community. ✨ This event is FREE! Originally, we considered a fee to cover costs, but I wanted to be fair and absorb the cost as an investment. ✨ This is NOT confrontational. This isn't about hearsay. We'll be using statistics and key indicators observed within our community to facilitate discussion. ✨ Who's participating? We'll have students from high schools and colleges across the Springfield-Branson metro area. This includes international students, Springfield-Branson natives, and those planning to leave or enter the workforce. ✨ The goal? To share perspectives and find common ground.
