Oregon Corrections Enterprises’ Post

Around March of 2024, a Beginner’s Spanish class was resurrected at TRCI. To participate, AICs must send a request to the TRCI Recreation Department asking to be added to the class. Class sizes are limited to 10 students, so the waiting list is quite long. Students meet once per week on Wednesday mornings for one hour. Going through the entire workbook will take around 20-25 weeks. OCE Laundry and Manufacturing has five team members currently enrolled in the Spanish class, and one of our Production Coordinators, Jose Castanon, has been helping these AICs by tutoring them throughout the week while they are at work. “As many of you know, learning a new language is challenging, especially when you don’t have anyone to practice with or to answer questions when they arise. To help with this, I’ve been supporting the AICs by boosting their confidence. I do this by answering their questions, breaking down complex words, and using those words in sentences that make sense to them. It’s like being a language coach, guiding them through the intricacies of a new language and helping them find their voice.” - Jose Castanon, OCE Production Coordinator #OCETeam #LanguageLearning #SpanishTutor
