Let's talk in-house legal team structure and the steps we can take to create more opportunities for your team!    Do you have the functions of "Lead Counsel", "Principal Counsel", or "Managing Counsel" in your legal team hierarchy?   If yes, I'd love to know more!    I'm advising a FTSE 100 TMT company on optimising their legal team structure at the moment.   Specifically, looking at their roles that fall between (what many call) Senior Legal Counsel and Head of Legal/Legal Director/Associate General Counsel - like the ones I've listed above!   How do you distinguish these positions from a Senior Legal Counsel in your team structure?   A. What’s your favorite part about being in-house counsel? For me, it’s working with the business departments. Expanding who we work with daily besides only other attorneys (although the attorneys on my team are the BEST), is such a great benefit. I learn about the business and I learn about the people. Communications, Clinical Quality, Finance, Clinical Operations. The list is endless of the wonderful people and business departments I get to work with. How does a linear legal career look like vs non-linear one? Linear career at a law firm often looks something like this: Associate 3 -> Associate 2 -> Associate 1 -> Senior Associate 3 -> Senior Associate 2 -> Senior Associate 1 -> Counsel -> Counsel -> Counsel -> Partner 3 -> Partner 2 -> Partner 1! Whereas non-linear could be anything really - for example something like this: In-house lawyer -> Associate 2 -> Associate 1 -> In-house lawyer -> Senior Associate 2 -> Senior Associate 1 -> Counsel -> General Counsel -> COO -> Anything! There is no ‘right path’. There is only the path that works for each of us individually.
