Where do the pathogens that cause surgical site infections come from? A recent study published in STI https://lnkd.in/eRWtpz_j revealed that a significant portion of surgical site infections following spine surgery originate from the patient's own microbiome. Furthermore, most bacterium isolates were resistant to the prophylactic antibiotic administered during surgery, and their resistance phenotypes correlated with the patient’s preoperative resistome. My quick take on #regenerativemedicine and #orthobiologics. Understanding #cellbiology and #molecularbiology is essential to harness combinations to maximally benefit patients. I bet #PRP + #MFAT is better than either alone in many conditions. Just as I bet #BMC + #PRP will operate in a synsergistic fashion as well. But the only way to know this is to collect the data in registries and then publish. It’s coming, the data is coming. It’s an exciting time to be in this field!

Very interesting study (with link to overview) that shows the that 86% of surgical site infections (spinal surgery) arise from bacteria present in the patient's microbiome, not externally. A majority are resistant to the prophylatic antibiotic used. This challenges current preventative measures..

Owing to the eye’s complex anatomy, treating retinal diseases has proven to be a tricky drug delivery challenge 👁️ “Topical drugs can revolutionise the treatment paradigm of retinal diseases,” said Xinyi Su, Acting Executive Director at A*STAR’s Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB). 🇸🇬 Su is part of a collaborative team in Singapore that developed a polymer-based delivery system for administering medications. The researchers adopted a nanomicelle (nEPC) approach, which uses tiny drug-bearing vessels that can traverse corneal barriers to reach the retina—suggesting a less invasive method compared to current treatments.
