The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that veterans are at 72% higher risk of suicide than those who have not served. To address this issue, HMP Global is partnering with Stop Soldier Suicide — a national nonprofit working to reduce the military suicide rate by 40% by 2030 — for the 2024 Day of Giving. On Friday, August 16, a portion of all HMP Global event and program registrations will support Stop Soldier Suicide’s lifesaving work. Let’s discuss what this term, Peer Support Program, means to you specifically.   As we, Coalition to Salute America's Heroes, strive to improve the support systems in place for our Service Members, I am interested in hearing your thoughts on any gaps in services that exist, the different mental/behavioral health challenges faced, whether there is still a stigma surrounding mental/behavioral health, and if there are enough or too many resources available.   By sharing our experiences and insights, we can work towards improving the support systems in place for our Service Members. Today, I'd like to share some statistics that highlight the significance of their sacrifices and the importance of our support. Deployment Statistics: Approximately 1.3 million U.S. service members have been deployed since 9/11. This includes over 700,000 deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan alone. Mental Health Impact: The stress of deployment affects not just the service members but also their families. Studies show that military families experience higher rates of stress, anxiety, and depression compared to civilian families. Are you a military veteran living in or around Lewiston, Idaho? You are not alone, and there are so many resources available for help. Here is a list of some resources available to veterans in or around the Lewiston region. Please let me know if I can expand this list. There's a program called Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) that can help with rent assistance, utility assistance, rapid rehousing of homeless veterans, gas vouchers, and up to $1,200 in automotive repairs. They will also help with legal assistance, such as evictions or debt collection, child support, and a few other things. That's just some of the services they offer. SSVF grantees vary depending on location. The Blue Mountain Action Council out of Walla Walla is an amazing group that serves a few regionally nearby communities. While most #Veterans transition smoothly into civilian life, some face service-related challenges that expand the federal governments capacity to address. For those of us in the #VeteranSpace, the need often feels, unending. Consequently, communities, often unfamiliar with #military needs, must support these Veterans. Well intentioned people across #nonprofits, #government, and #CharitableOrganizations, assume what a Veteran needs, and often duplicate services or put resources into solving a problem that doesn't exist. At Veterans Bridge Home, collective impact, remains at the forefront of our mission. Using technology systems like Unite Us with our community partners like Mecklenburg County, North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, and The Jeff Cohen Charitable Foundation allows for us to provide wrap around services across the social determinates of health. Even better? One of the ways we're #HelpingWomenNow: through our newly created Military Women's Patient Relief Fund! Military women are up to 40% more likely to develop breast cancer than civilians, and 700 veterans are diagnosed with breast cancer each year through Veterans Affairs Health Care alone. Through this fund, eligible service members and veterans will receive financial support to help with financial barriers to care, such as: 💗 Transportation and childcare costs during treatment 💗 Housing and rent costs due to lack of income 💗 Groceries to prevent food insecurity 💗 Expensive prescription co-pays or underinsured treatment costs Learn more: nbcf.org/military

If you are a Navy family, have you heard of Naval Children's Charity? They have many free resources available. They include: ✨ Free books for naval children, young adults, parents and carers. ✨ Doing Distance - A psychological toolkit for armed forces children which includes worksheets that are accessible through their website to download for free with accompanying videos. ✨ A wellbeing box for children aged 7-13 yrs, which includes a handbook, journal & cards ✨ Navigating Grief - A booklet for parents, carers and young people. ✨ Wisdom While You Work - A notebook for Naval children aged 10 – 25 years old with hundreds of life’s most important values to guide and encourage young people. Topics include health, kindness, honesty, love, enthusiasm, motivation and communication. They also have their Life Chances Programme. This offers opportunities to children and young people, not just those whose families are in crisis or in need of immediate financial support. These are opportunities where young people can come together with other Naval children, bond over shared backgrounds and lifestyles, have fun and discover new experiences, some of which may lead on to future careers. There are opportunities to suit all different children including those with a disability or illness. Children's sense of belonging and agency is supported when they see their lives reflected in storybooks. Being part of a military, Veteran, and First Responder families can be tough if their parents have a moral injury. It impacts affect the whole family, and children are often silent sufferers. Research-based storybooks using family narratives give voice to their experiences and support children's understandings.
