Military life for spouses and partners of serving personnel is complex and challenging in equal measure. Regular postings across the UK and abroad resulting in both job and network losses, professional and private. Add into that equation the long-term deployments of their partners – on critical training exercises or dangerous military operations - life can be super tough. Spouses are left juggling numerous plates as they fight to keep the home fires burning and the wheels of military life turning. And if they still want to have a career alongside military life, well, that just takes everything up a few notches on the Difficulty Scale. But that’s where community comes in. Not your military wives’ choir or coffee morning type of community, something very, very different. A coworking community of like-minded individuals. For this throwback Thursday, I wanted to share this visual I created five years ago based on how I viewed an operational environment. The critical point is that 80% of the population only cares about their livelihoods, and it's a competition within the cognitive domain. I've used this in two articles while I was in the military. Does it still apply in our current operational environment? Has it evolved over the years? I also wonder if this could be applied to other sectors outside the military, now that I've shifted my studies to other areas. Why hire a military spouse? *We are agile and pivot to adapt to quick change *We can be very self driven to get a task done with little to no oversight. *Networking, if we cant do it, we know someone who can. *Dedicated: We are committed to those employers who strive to make better opportunities for military spouses who are often over looked due to gaps in resumes or tenure. *Educated: 89% of spouses have some form of college education. Approximately 30% have a four-year degree, while 15% have an advanced degree. And yet 13% of the military spouse population is unemployed (Myself included)—about three times the national rate from 2017!! So please take a chance on hiring, training, and developing a military spouse!

Many people don't realize that the department of veterans affairs classified the military veteran community as underserved. I often post about how brands can connect with the military. What happens when the military reaches out to the local community? Airmen from Ellsworth Air Force Base (SD) volunteered around the Black Hills for the inaugural “Service before Self” day. Volunteer teams from Ellsworth Air Force Base’s 28th Bomb Wing scattered across Rapid City, helping out with housing construction projects in partnership with the Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity as well as projects with the Youth and Family Services. April presents us with an exceptional opportunity to honor the resilient hearts of military children. Although military children proudly embrace the term "military brat," many outside this lifestyle remain unaware of the experiences these children endure, both positive and negative. Annually, the Department of Defense collaborates with national, state, and local entities, including schools, military-support organizations, businesses, and private individuals, to honor military children and acknowledge their sacrifices. This recognition is particularly prominent every April during the Month of the Military Child. Established in 1986 by former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, the Month of the Military Child provides an opportunity for Americans to celebrate these children for their contributions on the home front and within their communities. According to the Department of Defense, over 1.6 million military children encounter distinct challenges and experiences due to their parents' service. These challenges may include relocating away from friends, enduring prolonged separations from parents, or witnessing their parents return home with physical or mental wounds. Among the 1.6 million military children, approximately 11,200 are offspring of Pennsylvania National Guardsmen. These children undergo similar struggles as those of active-duty service members' children but often lack access to equivalent programs, services, and community support.
