Restaurant reservation platform OpenTable says that all reviews on the platform will no longer be fully anonymous starting May 22nd and will #now show members' profile pictures and #first names. OpenTable notified members of this new policy change today in emails to members who had previously left a review on the platform, stating the change was made to provide more transparency. "At OpenTable, we strive to build a community in which diners can #help other diners discover new restaurants, and reviews are a big part of that," reads the OpenTable #email seen by BleepingComputer. "We've heard from you, our diners, that trust and transparency are #important when looking at reviews." "To build on the credibility of our review program, starting May 22, 2024, OpenTable will begin displaying diner first names and profile photos on all diner reviews. This update will also apply to past reviews." When leaving reviews on OpenTable, members specify a "Review display name" that will be shown in the review, allowing feedback to be left anonymously

OpenTable, an online restaurant reservation service, is setting an example with their "opt-out" option for Mother's Day. Impressed with the empathy and consideration for those who may find this day difficult. As someone who lost my mother last year, this gesture is greatly appreciated. Hot on the heels of Glassdoor's recent controversy around anonymous accounts OpenTable is wading into the mix. From BleepingComputer: "Restaurant reservation platform OpenTable says that all reviews on the platform will no longer be fully anonymous starting May 22nd and will now show members' profile pictures and first names." OpenTable is arguing that they need to build the credibility of their review program and by displaying first names and photos it will do that. If they were just putting first names in the reviews I would believe them but by including the photo it sounds like to me is that there are too many bad/negative reviews and OpenTable would like to encourage people to leave more positive reviews. I understand the desire to build trust in your review system. I am inherently mistrustful of almost all review sites. You may be able to get a feel for things based on the reviews but in my experience they are almost pointless (while it is entirely possible for two different people to have entirely different experiences with a product, store, restaurant, etc. years of experience have taught me that absolutes are rare and things almost always fall in the middle). Putting a first name and a photo on a review is not going to make me trust it more but it is definitely going to make me less likely to write a review.

Your Anonymous OpenTable Reviews Will Soon Display Your First Name: OpenTable's restaurant pages still feature a lot of reviews left by anonymous diners at the moment, but that will not be the case starting next month. From a report: The online restaurant reservation service is changing its policy around reviews so that they're not as anonymous -- and it's even applying the new rule retroactively. As BleepingComputer reports, it told users in an email that starting on May 22, it "will begin displaying diner first names and profile photos on all diner reviews." Further, "this update will also apply to past reviews." "We've heard from you, our diners, that trust and transparency are important when looking at reviews," the company also said in its letter, insinuating that it's changing the way reviews work based on user feedback. As BleepingComputer says, it'll be easy to match a bad review with customer reservation records based on the user's first name and when the post was made. While that's not nearly as bad as Glassdoor publishing people's names alongside their employer reviews without consent, it could still be very uncomfortable for people who wanted to talk about bad experiences without the fear of not being welcomed back into a particular establishment.
