Schools Week reports that 'Ofsted said a 'notable' number of schools are still not meeting the legal requirement to teach religious education to all pupils, and has told government to 'urgently' update guidance'. There is surely some internal inconsistency here - something that Ofsted always used to be very hot on avoiding. On the one hand, the latest Ofsted annual report finds that 88% of schools inspected were good or better, yet ''Ofsted said a 'notable' number of schools are still not meeting the legal requirement to teach religious education to all pupils'. This is particularly odd as Ofsted considers the quality of the curriculum to be central to the current inspection framework, 'We created a new quality of education judgement that has curriculum at the centre.' In reality, since the introduction of the current framework (EIF) in 2019, Ofsted's view of 'the curriculum' has narrowed into valuable subjects (i.e. those valued by the previous HMCI) and not valued subjects. I must declare an interest in that my HMI role of national lead for economics, business and enterprise was deleted, but another example is that since the introduction of the EIF there has not been a national lead or any curriculum guidance for design and technology. PHSE and the national curriculum subject of citizenship receive cursory attention. One of the positive impacts of the 2019 EIF was that primary schools have generally given much more attention to the full range of national curriculum subjects - all be it with a considerable increase of responsibility and workload for some inexperienced primary school teachers. It must be particularly irritating for them to discover that certain political protected secondary schools receive an 'outstanding' grade when they mirror Ofsted's policy of some subjects worth doing and other not (c/f https://lnkd.in/dKJ4u3VT ) One of the rare occasions I can remember where as an HMI leading an inspection was a few years ago when a secondary headteacher said to me at the start of day 2, ‘I felt from your team meeting last evening that you were struggling to give us a grade 1 but felt you couldn’t because of our lack of RE at key stage 4’ ( I had explicitly stated in the end of day one meeting that I was not going to give a grade 1 to a school whose curriculum was failing to meet statutory requirements). He continued that he had spoken to the head of RE late the previous night and as of the morning of day 2 the ks4 curriculum had changed and everyone was now doing RE. I explored how and he convinced me. As this was in a multi cultural area of East London I felt I had had a positive impact on the education of pupils in what was in all other respects, a great school.

At The Herzog Foundation workshop on Spiritual Formation, I shared a few examples of what a faculty development program could look like. A few people have asked if I could give more specifics or if I could share what I've seen. The simple answer is yes ... I love what I'm seeing schools doing in their efforts about developing their faculty - not as just excellent teachers, but more importantly as people who are growing to see their work more fully through thoughtfully gospel-saturated commitments. And, if you're seeing good examples of what schools are doing, I'd love to learn more about that and help add it to the community of learners who are trying to get better. This article seeks to lay some of the foundation for building a program to grow faculty's Christian worldview understanding and ability to put it into practice. The idea of “classical education” has been a large topic of discussion in the state of Florida over the past two years, causing debates about the curriculum that heavily emphasizes Western civilization with a focus on religious writings and theories. Although these programs are currently adopted primarily by charter and private schools, they could soon be headed into traditional public schools.
