Why do people cough more during classical music concerts? About 10 years ago a German economist "dropped" a paper titled "Why Do People (Not) Cough in Concerts?: The Economics of Concert Etiquette", basically claiming that concertgoers cough on purpose. “If coughing were purely accidental, it should occur evenly distributed over the concert, which is not the case,” he points out in this paper along with the fact that coughing increases during slower, quieter movements - something that anyone who frequents concerts must have noticed. Strangely, coughing also ramps up during complicated passages, or those unfamiliar to the audience. The author basically proposes that coughing is a passive-aggressive commentary on “uninteresting” sections of the performance. Key Insights: 💠 Event Week Occupancy: During the event week (June 13-15, 2024), occupancy rates soared to 60%, compared to 38% for the same period last year. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮 𝟮𝟮% 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆. 💠 Average Daily Rate (ADR): The ADR significantly rose, reaching £155 during the event week, up from £100 the previous year 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝟱𝟱% 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲. 💠 Length of Stay (LOS): The percentage of guests staying for two days 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟮𝟯% 𝘁𝗼 𝟯𝟲% this year. Similarly, the proportion of guests staying for 3-4 days 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟳% 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟱%. The data shows that Taylor Swift's concert can substantially impact local accommodation demand and pricing. The 22% increase in occupancy, coupled with a 55% rise in ADR, highlights the strong correlation between significant events and the performance of short-term rentals.
