PART 1- Module 1 DISCUSSION (VAL)- Gun Violence Gun violence has become a problem for the US government. Discuss how you think it should be solved.

This: RIGHT HERE is THE SOLUTION to gun violence in the US. The rate of gun violence in the US is ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE greater than gun violence in the next nearest country. We aren't doing all the things that other countries - the ones that have less gun violence - are doing. We need to start doing those things.

Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA (Laureus USA) has been recognized by the Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago White Sox through their Chicago Sports Alliance initiative to reduce gun violence. Funding will support Sport for Good Chicago, a coalition of more than 100 organizations working towards a Chicago where every young person has access to high quality, youth-centered sport programming in their neighborhood.   In a city where perpetrators and victims of violence are getting younger and younger, we need additional investment into innovative violence prevention efforts that reach kids before it's too late. Sports-based youth development is perfectly positioned to interrupt this cycle of trauma and violence. Through sport, young people have the opportunity to make connections with friends and caring adults who help them build skills in support of their overall physical and mental well-being. Sport creates space for young people to experience empowerment, healing, and collective joy in the face of overwhelming stress and trauma. I'm reminded of an insightful conversation that I had with LaVonte Stewart, MPA nearly a decade ago. He told me that every kid needs community and will find it somewhere. The question is whether they will find it through a positive team (such as his Lost Boyz Inc program), or a harmful team (such as a street organization). The problem -- too many kids don't have that positive option available to them. Through this investment, Chicago Sports Alliance has made sure that more young people will have the opportunity to choose the positive team.

The myth that mentally ill people are inherently violent is harmful stigma - the data shows most gun deaths are actually self-directed violence (suicide). And because federal funding for research on this public health crisis has been restricted for decades, we've been left in the dark about what inherently drives gun violence and how to prevent it through evidence-based solutions. From what I understand, by prioritizing this as a public health crisis through funding a scientific study, we can better understand how to save lives. #mentalhealthawareness #gunviolenceawareness

“Parents appreciate the safety changes but say the school needs to work on addressing the reason why students are arguing so much in the first place.” Kudos to the students who saw a threat and immediately notified their SRO. Republicans try to address the root cause while protecting and abiding by the US Constitution. To me, Democrats live in a world where inanimate objects like guns, poisons, knives, metal pipes, rocks, and a plethora of other objects are the reason for murder and suicides. Reality tells me guns do not fire without someone holding them and all others without a person using them. The root cause is the human being with mental illness, evil intention, by accident, or by self-defense. We have laws that prohibit killing. So, how many criminals and evil-doers abide by the law? Yet Democrats, in my opinion, would rather "infringe" on law-abiding US citizens' Constitutional Right to bear arms and not address the root cause.
